Edward Richards was a farmer at Troed-y-Rhiw, Llanfarian, for the baptism register at Llanbadarn records the baptism of his daughters, Ann and Elizabeth, who were christened on the 13th of November 1833.

In the Census of 1871 William Green, born in Dudley in the Midlands, lived at Baker Street, Aberystwyth, with his wife, Elizabeth, who was from Cardigan.

In the baptism register of Llanbadarn Church is recorded the bapti­sm of Charlotte, the daughter of Thomas Richards, a farmer of Dol­gamlyn Farm, and his wife, Charlotte. The infant Charlotte was christened on the 21st of October 1832 and died, aged five weeks, in November, 1832. The register also records the baptism of her brother Jenkin, in January 1830, and her sister, Magdalene, in November 1834.

Captain Roderick Edwards was the son of John Edwards of High Street, Aberystwyth, though he lived at Midway, Llanbadarn Fawr, probably from 1888 when he married the daughter of Edward Whittington, a gardener of Llanbadarn. In March 1892 Roderick Edwards, as master of the 'Ivanhoe', was sailing from Seking, Barbados, to St. Lucia when he died. The ‘Ivanhoe' was owned by a William Morris of North Parade, Aberystwyth.

William Henry Tregoning was one of the many men from Cornwall who came to this area as miners and, more importantly, as the captain of mines. This area was known as the 'Welsh potosi' after the rich silver producing area of Bolivia. William Henry Tregoning came from the Cornish parish of Gwennap and so did many of the other Cornish men working the Welsh mines. He seems to have been twice married for in 1871 he was recorded living in Bow Street with his second wife, Tabitha, and his children, William, John Rees, William Jason and John. He also ran the 'Six Bells' a public house in Llanbadarn.

John Tisdale was a carrier who once lived in Thespian Street, though in the 1861 Census he was living at Windmill Court. He had married a widower, Mary, much older than himself and she persuaded him to join the Baptist and agree to a public baptism by immersion at a pit somewhere near where the railway station now stands but he thought better of the proceedings when he arrived and immediately pulled out of the baptism. The local wags quickly composed a song on the day's event of which the refrain ran:

“Dwr, dwr, dwr,
Mae ceffyl John Tisdale yn y dwr".

Evan Simon lived in Rose Place, Llanbadarn Fawr in 1851 when he was a widower. He was described as a 'Master tailor employing two men' in the Census but it would seem that the men were his sons, Thomas and David, both journeymen tailors. He had three other children, John, Evan and Henry. His son, Thomas, is mentioned in ‘A History of Llanbadarn Fawr'.

Thomas Simon lived at Llangawsai in 1830 and, with his wife Elizab­eth had three children there; they were Thomas, Eleanor and Richard. About 1836 he moved to Aberystwyth and lived near Northgate Street and there Evan, James and John were born. It is very likely that Thomas Simon was the brother of Evan Simon (J37).

In memory of Annie Maria Evans, only surviving daughter of the late Rev. David Evans of Aberystwyth, who died October 11th 1869, in her 26th year. Also David Pierce Evans, only brother of the above, who was drowned on his passage from Liverpool to Kurachee January 1869, aged 22 years. Also in memory of Elizabeth Evans, widow of the late Pierce Evans, Esq., of Aberystwyth, who died on the 16th April 1875, aged 87 years.

The Aberystwyth Times of June 1869 reported that David Pierce Evans, the only son of the late Rev D. Evans, the Wesleyan Minister at Aberystwyth, had left Liverpool on the 11th of December 1868 on a voyage aboard the barque ‘Bryn Joor' of Newport, to Kurachee but had been taken sick and died three weeks later. He was the second officer of the vessel and, as the news did not reach the town until June 1869, we can presume that the vessel made its way to its destination.

Edith Margaret Jones was staying with her grandmother, Mary Whittington, the widow of Edward Whittington, a labourer and gardener of Llanbadarn (see J24), and she was suffering from bronchitis. Her grandmother nursed her all night; she told the inquest that the poor child was ill and that she gave the infant "senna tea and put a linseed poultice on her". She did not call the doctor as the child had been ill before and recovered but by morning the infant was dead.

S.M. John Pugh, R.D., Prebendary of st. David's Cathedral, and vicar of this parish, 1861 - 1893. Born 20 April 1833, died 7 May I893. And Louisa Jane, his wife, daughter of David and Ann Evans, born 27 May 1842, died 8 May 1899. And their three daughters. Anne Elizab­eth, born 16 July 1865, died 24 March 1866. Louisa Jane, born 29 Jan 1871, died 28 July 1877. Florence Elizabeth May, born 13 Jan 1874, died 25 Nov 1882.

Llanbadarn Church, in its present form, owes more to the Reverend John Pugh than to any other individual. John Pugh was born on the 20th of April 1833, the son of David Pugh of Rhiwarthenisaf. He attended both the Aberystwyth and Ystrad Meurig Grammar Schools before entering St. David's College, Lampeter, where he read Classics and Hebrew. He then entered the Church and was ordained by the Bishop of St. David's in 1857. A year before that he had been app­ointed curate at Llanbadarn Fawr, where the vicar was the Venerable Archdeacon John Hughes. At that time the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr was very extensive and included the town of Aberystwyth, as well as many of the outlying villages.

When Archdeacon Hughes died on the first of November 1860, it was decided to create a separate parish for the town of Aberystwyth. The living of Llanbadarn Fawr was offered to the Reverend John Gri­ffiths of Neath but he refused it on the grounds that he would not be allowed to hold both the livings of Llanbadarn Fawr and Aberyst­wyth. The living then passed to the Reverend E.O. Phillips, then Warden of the Welsh Educational Institution at Llandovery, who held it until 1861 when Aberystwyth became a separate parish and he took the living there. The parishioners of Llanbadarn Fawr had petitio­ned that John Pugh should be given the living of their parish and, to their delight, he was appointed vicar, a position he held for 32 years.

In October 1864 John Pugh married Louisa Jane, the daughter of the Rev. David Evans, Rector of Llanllwchaiarn at New Quay Church. His bride would hardly have found Llanbadarn Fawr a comfortable living for John Pugh reported that “The Church then was not much better than a heap of ruins, and there was no parsonage house attached".

John and Louisa Jane Pugh had seven children. The eldest, Anne Elizabeth, died at eight months of age in March 1866. David Richard and John Humphrey followed their father into the Church but their sisters, Louisa Jane and Florence Elizabeth May, both died young. The two youngest children, Herbert Austin and Beata Emmelyn, both survived their father.

From 1862 John Pugh led the parish in a programme of rebuilding and some £13,000 was spent on restoring the Church and building a new vicarage at Llanbadarn Fawr. They also built churches at Penr­hyncoch and Elerch, and schools at Penrhyncoch and Capel Seion as well as enlarging the existing schools at Comins Coch and Penyfron.

John Pugh was a faithful and loyal servant of his parishioners and took a part in public life by serving on the School Board, the Rural Sanitary Authority and the Board of Guardians. He also received recognition within the Church when he was appointed Rural Dean in 1866 and awarded the honorary position of Canon of St. David's in 1893.

John Pugh died on Sunday the 7th of May, 1893, after a short illness, at the age of 60. A friend wrote of him: "He was orthodox without being narrow and bigoted; a theologian devoted without being sanctimonious: a most sincere friend: a sympathetic comforter of the poor and afflicted: a tender husband and good parent: in brief a philanthropist in the fullest sense of the word".

In affectionate memory of John Jacob, student at the University College of Wales, and second son of David and Mary Anne Jacob of Aberystwyth, who died on the 2nd day of June 1875, aged 21 years. John Jacob was the son of David Jacob, who was from Rhydyfelin, and his wife, Mary Anne, who was born at Goginan, and was their youngest son. After his fathers death he helped his mother to run a grocery business. He was apprenticed into the drapery trade and, as was the custom, lived in the household of his employer, Mr Will­iam Thomas Williams, at Sydenham House in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth. It was Mrs Hannah Williams who first noticed his int­ellectual abilities and, with others, arranged for him to enter the newly opened University College in Aberystwyth. He was a very dil­igent and successful student who gained an award of £10 in his first term (Lent 1874) and took first prize in the Midsummer examination in logic and philology. In October 1874 he won an exhibition valid for three years and seems to have been active in Calvinistic circles in the town. At the University College John Jacob was one of just over a hundred students, most of whom joined in a procession at his funeral from the College to Llanbadarn. The procession, including the professors, was led by Principal Edwards, who conducted a service at the College, and Professor Grimley conducted the funeral service at the Church.

William Edward Phelp was agent of the Nanteos estate and father was a brother of the wife of William Thomas Rowland Powell of Nanteos. He was married to a daughter of Mr Hotchkins of Horncastle, Leicester, but they had no children. He lived at Sunny Hill, Tregaron.

In 1851 John Ross, a sailor, lived in Terrace Road, Aberystwyth, with his wife Margaret, and children James, Thomas, Elizabeth and Jane. A decade later the family were still at Terrace Road though James and Thomas were mariners and Elizabeth had become a dressmaker. In 1871 John Ross, who was from Llanilar, lived with his daughter, Elizabeth, at Terrace Road while his wife, Margaret, worked as a nurse in North Parade. His eldest son, James, lived with his wife, Mary Ann, in Portland Lane; they had just lost their only child, Thomas, in January, and James died six months later.

In February 1861 the Aberystwyth Observer reported the death of Mary Alice Manwaring of 'hooping cough' while living at pier Street, Aber­ystwyth. She was baptised on the 20th of April 1856 at Llanbadarn Church when the family lived in Pwllhobi and Frederick Manwaring was described as a 'skinner'. In 1871 the family lived in Northgate Street, Aberystwyth, and Frederick Manwaring. was described as a 'mining clerk'; he lived with his wife, Mary Ann, and his children George, a 'pupil teacher', Matthew, Alfred Arthur and Elizabeth Ann.

Enos Williams was an agricultural labourer who lived with his wife, Anne, in Fronfraith Cottage in 1871 with their children, Thomas, a mason, Jane and Anne, both dressmakers. They had another son, John, who was born in 1844. The Cambrian News of August 1889 carried the following report: 'On Wednesday morning, between eleven and twelve o'clock, an old man, named Enos Williams, aged seventy-five, of Llangawsai, attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat. He was conveyed to the Infirmary, and there his injuries were attended to. No motive can be assigned for the deed.'

In the 1841 Census Hugh Hughes, a weaver, was recorded at Llanba­darn with his wife, Catherine, and their children, Margaret, Hugh, Elizabeth, Thomas and a one day old child who was not named. In the t851 Census Hugh and Catherine Hughes were recorded with two of their children, Margaret and Jane, and two grandchildren, Mary Gilbertson and John Oliver. In the Census of 1871 Catherine Hug­hes was a dependant of her unmarried daughter Margaret, as was Mary Gilbertson who was described as 'blind from scarlet fever'.

I am grateful to Peter Glyn Williams for the following information:  J145 Hugh Hughes was a woollen-weaver who married Catherine Griffiths, 29 May 1808, Llanbadarn Fawr.  Margaret Hughes, daughter of Hugh and Catherine was probably mother of Mary Gilbertson, baptised 6 Jul 1841, Llanbadarn Fawr, and John Oliver, baptised 15 Aug 1844, Llanbadarn Fawr.  Mary Gilbertson (blind from scarlet fever) was in Aberystwyth Workhouse in the 1881 Census. She was buried in Aberystwyth Town Cemetery, 16 Feb 1893.   J146 John Hughes “who died June 5th 1832” was a woollen-weaver who married Jane Rees (died April 15th 1857) 26 Oct 1799?, Llanbadarn Fawr. 

[John Hughes and Jane Rees are grand-parents of Richard Samuel Hughes, the noted Aberystwyth musician. There is a commemorative plaque to R S Hughes on the side of a building near the Town Clock at the top of Bridge Street]

Grave J146 provides a fairly strong indication that Hugh Hughes, woollen-weaver and John Hughes, woollen-weaver are brothers. John Hughes was interred in this plot, 5 Jun 1832. Also buried in the same plot, 27 May 1832, is William Hughes son of Hugh and Catherine. Why else were they buried in the same plot unless they are Uncle and Nephew respectively?

The fact that Mary Jacob was born on the 16th of November 1841 is recorded on her tombstone and, in light of all the infant deaths in the family, she was baptised six days later. This was quite an unusual practice in the area where many children from the same family were recorded as being baptised together. The 1871 Census recorded that Richard Jacob was born at Maesbangor Mill and lived at New Mill, Llanbadarn Croyddin, with his wife Jane, and children, Jacob, Avarinah, Thomas Evan., and Jane Ellen. Another five children are recorded on the tombstones.

Jenkin Humphreys was known as 'Siencyn y Jail' and was the terror of the district in the early years of the nineteenth century. He was the keeper of the House of Correction which was built at the bottom of Great Darkgate street, Aberystwyth. A man of great st­rength and of indepenqent spirit he was responsible for keeping the peace as well as administering the punishments imposed on offenders. The stocks, imprisonment and public whippings, either at the town whipping post or tied to the back of a cart, were all the province of Jenkin Humphreys.

Sacred to the memory of the Reverend Richard Morgan, late incumbent of the parish of Llanychaiarn, and of St Michael's Chapel, Aberystwyth, whose character distinguished by unaffected piety, talent and integrity, had deservedly secured to him the Esteem and Affection of his grateful parishioners. He departed this life on the 6th day of April 1827, in the 75th year of his age.

This tablet, a tribute of affection and duty, is placed over the remains of Mrs Margaret Morgan, wife of the Revd Richard Morgan, minister of Aberystwyth, who died Feby the 19th 1808, aged 51 years. She was exemplary in the relative duties of Wife, Mother and Friend; and truly pious in her devotional exercises. J.W. Morgan, son of the above R and M Morgan, who died at Sheerness, Jany 2nd 1810, aged 26 years.

The Reverend Richard Morgan was the Curate at Llanbadarn Fawr when the Vicar, Richard Lloyd, aided by Thomas Powell of Nanteos, was able to begin the building of the first Chapel of St. Michael at Aberystwyth. He lived at 'Henblas', Llanbadarn Fawr, with his wife Margaret and his children. His two sons entered the church: Richard was a Vicar at Llantrisant and John was vicar of Llanychaiarn and later rector of st. Andrew's Church, Cardiff. His daughter, Anne, was married to James Williams, a curate at Llanychaiarn and St. Michael's Chapel, but he died in 1827, aged 28, and she died in May 1860, and both were buried at the churchyard of St. Michael. The first Chapel of St Michael was built in 1787 and consecrated on the 10th of October by the Bishop of St. David's. It was about 60 feet long and 30 feet wide and cost a total of £761, most of which was raised from the people of Aberystwyth. Richard Morgan was presented to the living by the Vicar of Llanbadarn Fawr and was reputed to be 'a magnificent reader of the church service, and was possessed of a splendid voice, which it is said rang forth like the notes of a silver clarion'.

Benjamin Jones was a mariner who lived at Skinner Street, Aberyst­wyth, with his wife Eleanor, and their children, Benjamin, William, Eleanor, Hugh and John, in 1841 and in 1851. In the Census of 1861 Benjamin Jones lived at Northgate Street with his son John, a carpenter, and daughter Elinor, a 'General Servant'. Winifred Jones was described as a charwoman in 1841 and a servant in 1851. She was probably the sister of Benjamin Jones.

In the 1851 Census David James was recorded at the farm of Tygwyn at the age of 75. The farm of about 100 acres was run by David James and his son Lewis, aged 44, and his daughter, Anne, aged 28. There were also three servants, one of whom, David. Benjamin, aged 16, was the grandson of David James.

Elizabeth Miles was the wife of John Miles a journeyman draper from Pembrokeshire, who, in 1851, was employed by Joel Evans, a woollen draper of Great Darkgate street, Aberystwyth. Her father, William, was a tallow chandler, who lived at Llanbadarn Fawr and rented some land on which to grow grain from Edward Daniel in the mid 1840's. In the Tithe map of 1846 he is recorded holding three acres of land at 'Cae Newydd' and 'Pant yr Onnen', the tithe on which amounted to thirteen shillings and six pence (67 pence). In 1841 the family of William and Elizabeth Richards consisted of four children, Ann, Mary, Elizabeth and David. Mrs Elizabeth Richards, the Aberystwyth Observer reported in 1867, 'was much respected and had been a member of the Calvanistic Methodists' connexion for upwards of 50 years'.

Underneath lieth the remains of Ann, wife of John Davies, innkeeper at Aberystwyth, she died Febry 2nd 1800, aged 33 years. Also John and Jane, children of the above named. John died Novbr 7th 1798, aged 5 years. Jane died May 8th 1799, aged 5 months.

The Gogerthan Arms was at the junction of Bridge Street and Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth, and was built about 1727. It was run for a while by Alexander Gordon and then rapidly altered to take part in the stagecoach trade in the early nineteenth century, probably by John Davies. It was one of the leading coaching inns in the town with regular services to Shrewsbury and other towns. In 1810 a coach, the 'Duke of Wellington' pulled out of the Gogerddan Arms at 4 a.m. twice a week in the summer bound for Shrews­bury but the inn could not compete with the Belle Vue. It later became Lion Royal Hotel though it was once called the 'New Black Lion' and is best remembered as the Padarn Hall of the University College of Wales.

The landlord of the Gogerthan Arms in 1791 was John Davies because his burgess certificate is still extant. It reads:

and kept in and for the said Town, Liberty and Burgh, on the twenty­ second day of October,

The certificate is unsigned but the Mayor was William Poole of Gogerddan and as burgesses had voting rights it may have been an attempt by the Gogerddan family to increase their support in the elections to Parliament.

Another of their sons, John, had died in October 1865 after a short illness.

In May 1773 the farm of Cwmhwylog was leased from the Nanteos Estate by one Gwen Joel for three lives or ninety nine years. The lives were her own, that of Evan Joel and of Jane Joel who was married to Richard Morgans. They paid twelve guineas a year rent with two hens and forty eggs at Shrove and eight chickens at Whi­tsun. In addition they owed services included two days harrowing, two days carrying muck, two days loading corn and two days reaping. Other obligations included grinding their grain at New Mill and providing forty teals of lime annually.

Evan Hughes was living in Poplar Row, Aberystwyth, in 1841 with his wife Elizabeth, and their children John, Richard and Elizabeth, though another daughter, Jane, was born about 1845, and she was a dressmaker in 1861. Evan Hughes was a skinner for most of his life but he is listed as a quarryman in the 1861 Census.

In 1861 William Blanning, from Frome in Somerset, lived at North Parade, Aberystwyth, as a 'Chelsea Pensioner and Sergeant of Militia'. With him was his wife, Jane, from Ireland, and his sons William, a printer's compositor born in Dover, and Thomas. Two other children, Charles and Jane, died as children in 1854 and 1855, and were buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's Church, Aberystwyth. In the 1871 Census Jane Blanning was recorded at Poplar Row and described as a 'Buglers Widow'.

He was succeeded by Charles Richards, who died in 1746 and Charles' son Roderick Richards, who was a clerk in the Navy Office at London. In 1754 this Roderick Richards married a London spinster, Mary Wilson, though he appears, and this was to develop into something of a family tradition, to have had two children by one Jenny (or Jane) Welland. About 1770, when he was High Sheriff of Cardiganshire, Roderick Richards began to build the mansion at Penglais to which he returned about 1785. His son, William Welland, took the name Richardes and the estate. When he died in 1797 the Penglais estate passed to his eldest son, Roderick Eardley Richardes, who was High Sheriff in 1813. Another son of William and Anna Arabelle Richardes was William Eardley Richardes (1795 - 1874) of Bryneithin, who was instrumental in the building of the monument on Pendinas.

Roderick Eardley Richardes, a Justice of the Peace and a former ensign in the 83rd Regiment of Foot, was married to Anne Corbetta Hannah Maria, a sister of Colonel Powell of Nanteos, and by her had at least six children. They were Alexander (see below), Maria, Roderick William (see below), Charles (who died in 1862), Cornel­ius and Avarina, who married a solicitor, Edward Hugh Davies.

Roderick William, the second son of Roderick Eardley Richardes, was born in February 1826. At the age of 19 he became a cadet in the 10th Bombay Native Infantry and stayed there for 23 years; he was mentioned in despatches in 1858. He rose to the rank of Capt­ain in the Bombay Native Infantry and was made a major in the Bombay Staff Corps in 1863. In 1866 he took command of the 16th Regiment Native Infantry and was described in the Bombay Gazette as "a kind hearted and considerate gentleman, who has a happy way of blending the 'sauviter in modo' with the 'fortiter in re'." Unfortunately, like many others, he fell ill in India and died in Carmarthen, aged 42, in 1868.

When Roderick Eardley Richardes died in 1851 the Penglais estate was inherited by his eldest son, Alexander Richardes, a Captain in the Royal Cardigan Militia, who was twice married. By his first wife, Elizabeth, he had eight children: Alexander Eardley (see below), Emily, Louisa Ann, Charles Eardley, William Athelstan Francis, Roderick Clement (see below), Williamina Alexandrina and Averina. By his second wife, Margaret, (see below), he had three children, George Alexander, Annie Corbetta (who married Edwin Joseph Ada in Kingston, Canada, in 1901), and Cornelius Campbell Richardes.

It seems that Captain Richardes was quite an unstable character as his grandson, Eardley J Richardes, pointed out to Henry Bonsall who recorded in his diary:

Eardley says that Alexander Richardes shot the tenant of Penglaise fach, Edwards, one Sunday morning but they could not prove it as he got back and put dust on the guns and when Sergeant Evans came to search he found dust on them. He was a very quick tempered man and if you put your head over the wall up went his gun like a shot. Roderick used to be always with him and took care of him and gave him whiskey.

Captain Richardes, who died in 1883, left the estate to his son Roderick Clement Richardes, though the rightful heir should have been his grandson, Eardley J Richardes. Eardley was the eldest son of Alexander Eadley Richardes and his wife, Maria; they had two other children, Ernest Clement, who died in 1874 aged 6 and George Herbert. In April 1870 Alexander Eardley Richardes, the eldest son of Captain Richardes, was thrown out of a trap in an accident and killed. Eardley though did not inherit the estate which passed to his fathers' brother, Roderick Clement Richardes, but he did marry his grandfather's second wife, Margaret, and by her had three children. Henry Bonsall, in his diary, wrote that "Eardley is a gentlemanly nice spoken man" and even employed him, at 18 shillings (ninety pence) a week in 1904 when Eardley was 42, and the father of nine children.

Roderick Clement Richardes inherited the family property and the family tendency for he spent years living with a woman in Aberyst­wyth while trying to divorce his wife. He did divorce her, on the grounds of her insanity and married his mistress by whom he had two daughters and a son. This was Roderick Alexander William Pryce Richardes who, after a year at Sandhurst, was gazetted as a Lieut­enant into the Third Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, in December 1917. He served in Ireland for six months and was then sent with the 11th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, to Salonika, where he was wounded in action on the 18th of September 1918. He was last seen on a stretcher, seriously wounded but cheerful, as a prisoner of the Bulgarians and officially presumed dead in March 1919.

When Roderick Clement Richardes died in July 1925 the Penglais estate passed to his brother William Athelstan Francis Richardes of Leamington who, according to Henry Bonsall, "has had a child by some other woman to whom he is not married". Penglais mansion was bought by D. Alban Davies and presented to the University College of Wales to become the residence of the Principal.

The last surviving son of Captain Alexander Richardes was George Alexander Charles Richardes who died in May 1945, aged 69 years. He spent most of his life in Birmingham but lived at ‘Elms', Elysian Grove, Aberystwyth,shortly before his death. He was a keen bellringer and a devoted member of Llanbadarn Church where he was, briefly, a churchwarden.

The Cambrian News reported that they had received a message by telephone that Captain David Williams, the Second Officer of the S.S. Camros sailing out of Bute Docks, Cardiff, had died at sea off the port of Lisbon. He was the son of Isaac Williams, an ex-manager of Downie's Vault, and had been at sea most of his life. He left a widow and one daughter.

Hannah Griffiths was the daughter of Captain David Watkins and his wife Eleanor, of Chalybeate Street, Aberystwyth, and the wife of Captain John Griffiths of the schooner 'Alert', and the ‘Eleanor Thomas'. The Cambrian News reported that 'Captain Griffiths, during many years voyaging, was in no fewer than three shipwrecks. He was in the Czar when she was lost at Penmaenmawr, in the Echo when she was lost at Penzance, and in the Alert when she was wrecked at Plymouth'. He was a director of the Cambrian Shipping Insurance Company, a Liberal, a member of the Calvinistic Methodist Tabernacle Chapel and a teacher in the Sunday school.

The Aberystwyth Observer reported that John Francis was found dead on the roadside near the Workhouse and that a 12oz bottle of oxalic acid was found in his pocket. Mr H.C.Fryer, the agent of the Gogerddan estate, requested a post mortem and the man's stomach was cut out and sent to a professor of Chemistry at Bristol who concluded that death was caused by the acid.

Frank Fear was listed as a fishmonger in the census of 1871 when he lived in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth. He was from Somerset and his wife, Jane, came from Torquay in Devon, but their four children, Thomas R, Nelly R, Theodore and Lilly, were all born in Aberystwyth. It is probable that Frank Fear came to Aberystwyth about 1864 as the following appeared in the Aberystwyth Observer in May 1865:

In 1861 John Hughes lived at Queen Street, Aberystwyth, with his wife, Mary, from Goginan, and his children, Margaret, born in Tre'rddol, a dressmaker, and Richard, born in Talybont, and, like his father, a horsekeeper. John Hughes was for many years an ostler at the Gogerddan Arms Hotel and, despite failing health, had gone to work early to prepare some horses when he fell into a fit from which he died.

William Clayton lived at High Street, Aberystwyth, with his wife Elizabeth and their children William, Mary and Jane, in 1851. At St. Michael's Churchyard a tombstone records the death of Hugh and Susannah, children of William Clayton, master mariner, who died in 1863 and 1865.

In the 1841 Census Elizabeth Edwards was recorded living at Love­sgrove with her children Jane, Evan, Elinor, Elizabeth and Edward. Lovesgrove was part of the Nanteos estate until 1843 when it was sold.

Huw Morris was a shoemaker who was recorded in the 1871 Census living at Llanbadarn with his sister, Esther. He is also mentioned by 'Alltud' in her account of Llanbadarn given in Appendix 2 .

It is possible that David Doughton was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Doughton (J339 and J337) and that he was related, possibly a brother, to Evan Doughton who was also a mariner but not by choice. In 1812 Evan Doughton was press ganged at Aberystwyth into the navy and his discharge notice has survived. It states:

To whomsoever it may concern. These are to certify that Evan Doughton, whose description is hereunto annexed, has been this day discharged from His Majesty's Hired Tender Ann, by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, he having caused to be paid Eighty Pounds into the hands of the Treasurer of the Navy, towards raising substitutes for himself according to their Lordships directions.

The said Evan Doughton is five feet, seven inches and half high; twenty six years of age; he has blue eyes, red hair, fresh complexion - is a native of Aberystwith, in the County of Cardigan and a married man.

David Doughton is recorded in the Census of 1841, 1851 and 1871 when he was living, as a retired mariner, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their grand-daughter, Elizabeth Bottwood, at Shipbuilders Row, Aberystwyth.
