In memory of Peter Morgan of Glyn Padarn Lodge, who died March 28th, 1881, aged 51 years. "I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the World to come.” Amen. Also in memory of Jane Morgan, widow of the above Peter Morgan, who died 13th August 1887, aged 77 years. "Until the day break and the shadow flee away."

A native of Llangeitho in the heart of Ceredigion, Peter Morgan was one of those men who, in the Victorian age, embodied the virtues of loyalty, dev­otion and service, both to their employer and their church. Peter Morgan spent his working life as a gardener, devotedly tending the land, first at Aberllolwyn and then, in 1867, at the home of Mr Hugh Hughes, a solicitor, at Glynpadarn. He lived, at Glyn Padarn Lodge, with his wife Jane who was twenty years his senior and came from Llanilar.

Peter Morgan was known to everyone as 'Old Peter', and was a faithful servant to the Hughes family who, in turn, acquired their respect. Such was his devotion to the family that he asked Mr Hughes, Senior, whether he could leave his life savings, after the death of his wife, to Hugh Hughes, Junior. As was usual of the Victorian worker Peter Morgan had made a virtue of sav­ing from his wages in order to provide for his old age and had accumulated the not inconsiderable sum of £500 by the time of his death.

Peter Morgan was devoted to the Church. He was a Churchwarden and regularly sang in the Choir and he was a teacher at the Sunday School. He died in March 1881 after a short illness and was buried next to the Hughes family vault.

Richard Herbert was born in the village of Llanbadarn Fawr and in 1851 he was farming 33 acres of land at Pwllhobi with his wife Jane, born in Llanrhystud, and his children Evan, Mary, Jane, Ann and Margaret.

In memory of' Trevor Tysilio, fourth and beloved child of Hugh and Ellen Sophia Hugthes of Aberystwyth, died the 22nd of March, 1849, in his 3rd year. His remains are interred in the family vault beneath. Also those of Marsia Ellen, sixth child of the above parents, who died on the 15th of January 1852, aged 1 year and 5 months. "If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him". Beneath lie the remains of John Hughes, (Solicitor), of Aberystwyth, who died at Lluest Gwilym October 15th, 1870, aged 84 years. Also of Ellen Sophia Hughes, wife of Hugh Hughes, Glyn Padarn, who entered into rest 7th April 1887, aged 68 years. Also of the above named Hugh Hughes of Glyn Padarn, who entered into rest on the 14th Septernber 1887, aged 79 years. Sacred to the memory of Sarah, widow of the late John Deane, Esquire, of the city of Dublin, who died at Aberystwyth on the 13th Decr. 1846, aged 89 years. Also of Jane Lovina, wife of Paul Maggs of the city of Bristol, who died at Aberystwyth April 5th, 1845, aged 51years and also of Thomas Johnson, her brother, many years resident at Cape Town, who died in Aberystwyth September 15 th 1848, aged 57 years.

Hugh Hughes, Senior, was a solicitor who married Ellen Sophia Maggs of Bristol. The Maggs family had strong connections with Aberystwyth and in 1841 four other members of the family lived in or near Aberystwyth including Jane Maggs who was visiting Hugh Hughes's brother, John Hughes, at Lluest Gwilym. J ohn Hughes was another solicitor who was to remain unmarried. Hugh Hughes prospered as a solicitor and with his wife had ten children; Reginald Hugh; Theodore Charles; Arthur Johnson; Trevor Tysilio; Hugh; Edwin Frederick; John; and Ellen Beatrice Hughes. Hugh Hughes, Junior, was a Cambridge graduate who followed his father's profession and worked for many years as Clerk to the Aberystwyth Board of Guardians. John Hughes, of Lluest Gwilym, wrote a book called 'The History of the Parliamentary Representation of Cardiganshire'.

Jeremiah and Mary Evans were living in Penparcau in 1841 and in 1851 when Jeremiah was a labourer and had two daughters, Hannah and Ann. John Evans is recorded in the 1871 Census as a stonecutter. Penparcau in 1841 was known as Penparke or even Penparkie and stretched on both sides of the turnpike road from Trefechan to Southgate. The population of the hamlet was 239 people most of whom were workers in agriculture and related industries. There were 31 agricultural labourers and only one farmer; the next most important occupation was that of mason of whom there were eight. There were three shoemakers, two tailors and two shipwrights as well as the following: ropemaker, joiner, tanner, carpenter, gardener, sawyer, wheelwright, weaver and saddler.

David Jones was born in Clarach but in 1841 he was living at Moore street in Aberystwyth with his wife and daughter and earning his living as a tailor.

Morgan Edwards, Bilston House, o'r pentref hwn, yr hwn a fu farw mehefin 24ain, 1885, yn 59 mlwydd oed. Hefyd am Mary! Edwards, anwyl briod i'r uchod, yr hon a fy farw Mawrth 24ain 1904, yn 77 mlwydd oed.

Although born at Bilston in Staffordshire John Edwards was of Welsh parentage and was able to speak the language fluently. A joiner by trade he came to live in Llanbadarn in 1896 and shared Bilston house with his brother-in-law for 36 years. He was a faithful member of Saron Calvinistic Methodist Chapel.

In memory of William wheeler of Aberystwyth, late of Cleobury Mortimer, who died on the 19th November 1860, aged 84 years old. Also in memory of Anne, his wife, who died 25th September 1869, aged 83 Years.

In 'Aberystwyth and it's Court Leet' by George Eyre Evans the author preserved many of the official documents of old Aberystwyth and amongst them were the lists of people accepted to be burgesses of the town. The very last man to be admitted a burgess of Aberystwyth was William Wheeler in November 1831 when he was described as a wine merchant. In the 1841 Census he lived at Trefechan with his wife Anne and his son William and carried out the trade of tanner.

James Davies was an agricultural labourer who lived in Penparcau in 1841 with his wife Elizabeth and his children. After his death Elizabeth took a post as a housekeeper though she remained at the family home in Penparcau with her daughter Mary and son James.

Er coffadwriaeth am lsaac Davies o'r Drefechan, yr hwn a fu farw y 15 Hydref 1860 yn 60 mlwydd oed.

Amongst the correspondence of H.J. Lloyd, Superintendent of Police at Llanbadarn, preserved in the National Library of Wales is a letter to the Chief Constable written on October 16th, 1860. It states: "Sir, I beg leave to inform you that Isaac Davies of Aberystwyth, Labourer, aged 61, fell over Penyranchor Hill into the harbour yesterday night about 7pm and was drowned. His body was found this morning." The Aberystwyth Observer reported that Isaac Davies had gone down to the harbour about 7 at night to meet his son and was walking along a track, nine feet wide, when he fell. The track had no fencing and to reach the harbour he would have had to scramble down the rocks which were very dangerous as three months earlier another man, Evan Daniel, had been killed at the same spot.

Sacred to the memory of Daniel Price of Llainygawsau, Tanner, who departed this life January 28 1855, aged 72.

In 1841 Daniel Price, spelt ‘Pryse' in the Census, lived at Llangawsai though he was born in Llandewibrefi as was his wife Elizabeth; the birthplace of their 15 year old son is not known. Daniel Price was a tanner and rented his premises from one Edward Daniel; he lived in a house with a small garden on which he paid no tithe according to the Tithe Map of 1846 for it was very unusual to pay tithe on a cottage. Next door to Daniel Price was Elizabeth Morgan who is also buried at Llanbadarn (see J327).

William Lloyd was a shoemaker who lived in Queen Street, Aberystwyth, for most of his married life though in 1861 he lived in the White Horse Court. With his wife, Margaret, he had eight children: David, a 'Gas Works Stoker'; James; Elinor, a nurse; Ann; Elizabeth; Thomas; Mary and Anna.

John Jones was from Llandifriog, Cardigan, and lived in Little Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth (present day Eastgate Street) with his wife and five children: Hannah, a straw bonnet maker and milliner; Elizabeth, milliner and dressmaker; Margaret, milliner and bonnet maker; Sarah and Mary, a milliner and dress maker.

In the 1871 Census Elizabeth Parry is recorded living at Ffynon Caradog with her parents. The family came from Scotland and James Henderson was a farmer and land agent.

In memory of John Warberton of London, a native of Stanwig, near Carlisle, who died at the Belle View Hotel, Aberystwyth, 29th February 1856, aged 51 years.

In the 1851 Census John Warburton of Carlisle is listed as one of the visitors and his occupation is giving as commercial traveller.

Elizabeth Jones is recorded in the 1851 Census living at Pwllhobi, Llanbadarn Fawr, with her daughter Abigail who was thirty years old and a needlewoman. Elizabeth Jones was born in East Norfolk and was a carpenter's widow. Georgena Jones is also recorded in the 1851 Census living with her mother, Jane Jones, in Baker Street, Aberystwyth; she was then an infant and she died early in May, 1856, aged ten years.

Sacred to the memory of Caroline, the beloved wife of George Fosset of Aberystwyth, who departed this life on 2nd April 1850, aged 53 years. Also in memory of the above named George Fosset, who died July 18th 1866, aged 68 years. Mark the perfect man and behold upright for the end of that man. Also to the memory of Elizabeth Fosset, widow of the above named George Fosset, who died March 14th 1904, aged 85 years.

George Fosset was a mine agent who held interests in several mines around Aberystwyth from which he accumulated great wealth. He lived with his second wife, Elizabeth, in Laura Place, Aberystwyth, and was Mayor of Aber­ystwyth in 1858. He died at Llandridnod Wells, where he had gone to improve his health, and the Aberystwyth Observer paid him tribute when they wrote:

'A just, an upright, an honourable man - in taking him from amongst us death has robbed society of a gracious gentleman and a generous friend'. His wife continued to live at Laura Place until her death with her faithful servants Margaret Price and, while she was young, her daughter Mary June Price. I n 1868 Mrs Fosset, while walking dowm Bridge Street at the time of the November Fair, had her pocket picked and a purse stolen. The thief, Mary Ann 0 'Brian was caught and sentenced to six months hard labour while her accomplice, Mary Smith, was given three months hard labour.

Joel Morgan was an auctioneer at Aberystwyth though he kept the Commercial Hotel in Great Darkgate Street; he is recorded there in 1816 but not in 1822 when the next directory was drawn up. He was living in Portland Street in 1841 and 1851 with his children, Ann, Martha, William, Joel, Susanah and Thomas.. Also buried at the family vault though there is no mention on the memorial is William Morgan who died on the 4th of June 1895. Born on the 28th of July 1825 William Morgan became a clerk to an auctioneer and lived at Cardigan House, Queen's Road, Aberystwyth. On the bank holiday he had gone fishing with his employer, J.E. James, and they were returning when the trap they were travelling in overturned. Seriously injured William was taken into the Druid Inn at Goginan where he died.

Frederick Evans was one of the ten children of George and Susan Evans of Kent who had settled in Aberystwyth and were obviously comfortably provided for as George was a mine agent with independent means. As a young man Frederick George Evans was in the Militia but on leaving the family home in Portland street he became a bus driver. His daughter, Anna Fredericka Evans died after 2 days illness in May 1895.

The Bonsall family is thought to have originated in the village of Bonsall, near Matlock in Derbyshire, though the first Bonsall to achieve honour was Thomas, the son of George Bonsall and his wife Mary Beardmore, who was born in 1730 and died in 1808 and is buried at Llanafan. Thomas Bonsall was born at Ecton in Staffordshire where his father worked in the local mine and he probably came to the Aberystwyth area in connection with the lead mining industry about the year 1770. In 1796 he was Sheriff of Cardiganshire and was responsible for delivering a loyal address to King George III who had survived an attempt on his life by one Maywell Nicholson and, as a result, Thomas Bonsall was made a knight. Sir Thomas Bonsall adopted a coat of arms largely composed of the pickaxe as a symbol though one of his sons deftly transformed them into crosses.

Sir Thomas Bonsall had ten children and they lived at the family's town house at 'Y Crynfryn', Little Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth and at Fronfraith, an estate at Llanbadarn which was purchased in 1784. Of the children Winifred married a Captain Lozon, a Frenchman who was a friend of the Powells of Nanteos, and lived at Y Crynfryn until her death in 1859. Her brother, John Smith Bonsall, shared the house which their father had built in present day Eastgate Street, until his death in 1858; their father had also built a row of houses along the front known as Bonsall's Row and though they have been rebuilt a single letter 'B', high on the wall, linl{s that part of Marine Terrace with the Bonsall family. There was another son, Thomas, who died at a young age and another, George, who became a doctor and built the house at Glanrheidol which he bequeathed to his younger brother William. William had trained as a surgeon at Shrewsbury and came to Aberystwyth to live in 1808 but on his death, without children, he bequeathed the house to his sister Mary who was married to James Hughes and he took the name of James Hughes - Bonsall on inheriting Glanrheidol in 1824. The bulk of the property of John Smith, George and William Bonsall was to pass to the son of their brother, Isaac, John George William Bonsall.

Isaac Bonsall trained for the Church and became Rector of Llanwrin, Montgom­eryshire. He married Catherine, the daughter of the Rev. John Davies, Rector of Cemmaes, and his wife Jane, who was descended from an ancient Welsh family that could trace its ancestry back to Cadwallader in the Seventh Century. Isaac Bonsall had four children: Jane, who married the Rev. I. Rees of Capel Bangor; Thomas, the eldest son, who married Mary Hughes; John George William and Isaac, a clergyman, who married Rosa Williams and lived at Dole.

John George William Bonsall was born at Llanbrynmair Rectory on the 29th of May 1817 and was four years younger than his brother Thomas; the recorded birthdate on the memorial is almost certainly wrong and, in all probability, only given because it coincides with that of his wife, Frances. John, as he was known, was educated at Shrewsbury School and became a solicitor, working at Machynlleth as can be seen from his 'Case Book' for the period October 1843 to December 1845 which is preserved in the National Library of Wales. On the fourth of May, 1853, John married Frances, the daughter of Joseph Davies of Galltyllan, Montgomeryshire. She was to inherit the family estate on the death of her brother, Edward, in 1872: the Galltyllan estate yielded an income of £403 for the half year to May 1873 while the Fronfraith estate, including properties in Aberystwyth, realised over £800 for the same period: in addition John Bonsall could rely on income from the mortgages he held and from his earnings as a solicitor: he was regarded as being wealthier than the Pryse and Powell families. He built many houses in the area along the frontage of 'Y Crynfryn' and even today a small plaque at the end of the lane by the Pier Hotel proclaims 'This pine end belongs to J.G.W. Bonsall, Esq., of Fronfraith. Built 1867.'

John and Frances Bonsall had two sons and four daughters: John Joseph, who died in October 1914 and is buried at Capel Bangor; Frances Winifred, who married Guy Hardwin Gallenga, and died in 1925 and is buried at Hendon Park Cemetery; Elizabeth Jane, who married Edward Meuthen Leir of Taunton; Mary Catherine, who was unmarried and is buried in the family vault, lived at Fronfraith and cared for her father until his death: she was bequeathed a house at 9, Marine Terrace, but spent most of her time in London with her sister Elizabeth until 1939 when she returned to Aberystwyth. She was always a generous supporter of the National Society for the Blind. Another child was Sarah Margaret, baptised in April 1861 she died at the age of seven months and is buried in the family vault; and Hugh Edward, the youngest.

Major Hugh Edward Bonsall of the Cardigan Artillery was, like his father, a staunch Conservative and, at one time, Chairman of the Llanbadarn Bench. He was also Income Tax Commissioner for Cardiganshire and Montgomeryshire, and High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1916. He inherited the Fronfraith estate in 1914 on the death of his elder brother. He was married to Gertrude Elizabeth, the second daughter of J. T. Morgan of Nantcaerio and she was to be honoured with an M.B.E. for her work with the Red Cross.

John Bonsall was, of course, a solicitor as well as a man of property and as such he took an active part in public life though he was too reserved to stand for election to Parliament. He was High Sheriff of Cardiganshire in 1866 and took a leading part in establishing and running the Aberystwyth Infirmary and the Penyfron School at Llanbadarn. He served on the Quarter Sessions of Cardiganshire and was a Justice of the Peace at Llanbadarn where he was highly regarded as a just and straight-forward man.

John Bonsall never spoke to his father after 1858 and the reason the pair quarrelled was the manner in which John is alleged to have acquired the Bonsall estates including Fronfraith. Sir Thomas Bonsall had left the prop­erties to his children and Fronfraith had gone to John Smith Bonsall who was a bachelor. Shortly before he died in 1858 John Smith Bonsall had made a deed of gift of the property to John Bonsall and when his brother, Isaac Bonsall, who was John's father, came to Aberystwyth to claim the property as heir he was upset to find that his son had outmanoeuvred him. Isaac then approached his elderly sister, Winifred Lozon, to complain about the loss of Fronfraith and asked her to make a will leaving her money, about £30,000, to him. This she did and Isaac Bonsall returned to Llanwrin. When John found out what his father had done he was outraged for, twelve years previously, he had persuaded the old lady to make a will in his favour without his father knowing. Once again he persuaded her to make out another will, the third, this time in his favour and on her death, in 1859, he was able to produce the will and claim the money. His father was, naturally, angry at being outmanoevred for a second time and contested the will but there was an out of court settlement by which John paid his father £6,000 in return for a small piece of land. However Isaac was so upset that he crossed out John's name from his will where he had been bequeathed Dolwenlynllyn Farm, near Dolgellau, and substituted that of his eldest son Thomas; John then contested the deed and his brother gave way so that he got the farm.

In old age John Bonsall was a striking figure who was very popular around Aberystwyth where his long nose and large protruding lower lip and his independent manner were remarked upon. He continued to carry out his duties until the day of his death even though he had gone blind and had had one of his eyes removed in July 1897: he is supposed to have come round from the chlorofom and his first words were to the doctors "I have written out the cheque and all it wants is filling in" which was done to the sum of £40.

Neareby is the vault of J.G.W. Bonsall whose father was the Rev Isaac and in 1851, his son, also named lsaac. Although the vault bears no other inscription it is recorded .that Isaac and Rosa Bonsall both died at the age of 34 and are buried in Llanbadarn: Isaac was buried in December 1861 and his wife in May 1863; it is probable that one of their children, Frederick Brooke Bonsall, who died in 1862 aged eighteen months is also buried here.

This area of the Churchyard consists of a number of family vaults and they are not all clearly marked as the spreading vegetation has grown over many of the inscribed stones. It is clear that there are three vaults in this area which have not been recorded though the vault near to the Bonsall family vaults is that of the family of Dr Gilbertson.

In 1851 Thomas Jones, a carpenter, lived in Southgate, Penparcau, with his wife Mary and their children, John, Sarah, Frederick, Mary, Mercy, Margaretta, Miriam and Betsy. In her obituary the Cambrian News reported that Mary Jones was “a woman of undoubted religious zeal" who could relate many interesting stories of old Aberystwyth. She was a faithful member of Tynlone Calvinistic Methodist Chapel at Rhydyfelin.

In 1871 David Jones, a carrier, had lived in Llanbadarn for about ten years. With him lived his wife, Mary, and their children John Richard, a teacher, Thomas, Mary, Edward and Richard David as well as his father, Edward Jones, a retired farmer. He was an original member of the St. Padarn Lodge of Oddfellows and died after a 'long and painful illness borne with much patience.' He left three sons at his death: Edwrard, who continued the family bus­iness; Richard David who lived at Great Darkgate Street and John Richard who was living in Cumberland. (See G178).

Born in Llansantffraed Isaac Edwards was living in Penrhyncoch in 1834 and working as an agricultural labourer. With his wife Gwen he had five children, Ann, Margaret, Eliza, John and David. His son David became a lead miner and in 1871 supported his father with the help of his sister, Anne.
