Underneath are deposited the earthly remains of Mr David Griffiths, of Rhosgoch in this Parish. He died at Llandrindod on the 9th of Octbr 1834. Aged 55 years. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day, nor the hour wherein the son of man cometh. Matthew XXV.15 Also to the much respected memory of Jane, the wife of David Griffiths, who died Feby 2nd 1855, aged 77 years. The just shall live by faith. Gal. 3.11. And also in affectioniate memory of Mary Margaret, daughter of the above named David and Jane Griffiths, who died Jany 13th 1855, aged 41 years. She was ----, but words are wanted to say what. Think what child and sister ought to be, and she was that.

Sometime after the death of David Griffiths the family moved to Hen Blas, Llanbadarn Fawr, where Jane Griffiths lived with her unmarried daughter, Mary Margaret. Jane, who was born in Llanelli, lived quite comfortably on her income from rents. Her eldest daughter, Eliza Charlotte, was married to the Revd. David Jones, Vicar of Llandinam in 1851.

In memory of Michael Barbery who died 23rd June 1873, aged 78 years. Also of Anne, wife of the above named, who died 9th June 1872, aged 82 years. “O teach us to remember our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisd­om.” Psalm XC .12.

At a time when lead mining was prosperous a large number of Cornishmen, many from the parish of Gwennap, came to this area to work. Michael and Anne Barbery were both from that parish and Michael, like so many of the Cornish, became a mine agent. For years he lived at a house called Plinli-­mon, on the road between Dyffryn Castell and Eisteddfa-gurig, but on his retirement he moved into the village. It was quite common for men of his social scale to employ domestic servants and one of his servants, in 1851, was a young Irish girl.

Here lieth the body of Mary, the wife of Richard J enkins, late of Bronygo in this Parish, who departed this life the 9th day of April 1848, aged 89 years.

Bronygof Farm was fairly extensive, over 140 acres, during the Nineteenth Century. For most of that century it was farmed by the above family. It would appear that Richard must have married Mary late in life for John Jenkins, the father of young Jane, was born about 1780. It was the custom for centuries that the parents would raise their children expecting that in old age they would be cared for and this is an instance of such an extended family.

It is possible that John Evans began his working life at Llangawsai and moved into Llanbadarn, as a millwright, in 1841. His wife Anne, from Borth, bore him at least two sons; the eldest was Thomas, born in April 1840 and the other was David, born in the summer of 1843.

Here also are deposited the remains of Hugh Davies of Aberystwyth, (shoemaker), who departed this life the 11th day of December 1804, aged 37 years. Here also lieith the body of Anne Davies, wife of the above named Hugh Davies, who departed this life the 6th of March l826, in the 67th year of her age.

Sacred to the beloved memory of William Jones Esqr., Rhosgoch in this Par­ish, died June 27 1802, aged 22 years. Also to the revered memory of Elizabeth Jones, died Decr 31st 1821, aged 83 years, mother of the above and relict of the late William Jones, Esqr., whose remains are interred in the Church of Llanelly, Carmarthenshire. Likewise to the affectionately treasured memory of Mary, daughter of the above named William and Elizabeth Jones of Rhosgoch, who died the 27th day of March 1851, aged 77 years.

This stone marks the place where three sons and three daugthers of John Jones of Cefcoed, Gent., Herbert, Herbert, Arthur Jones. Mary, Mary, Margaret Jones, all died in infancy. Like as these infants soon did bend their places to their mortal end, so all the rest of human kind must soon depart this life, you'll find.

Here lie the earthly remains of Elinor Evans, the wife of John Evans, of Aberystwyth, (Mariner), who departed this life the 7th day of March 1821 in the 41st year of her age. Also three children of the above named John and Elinor Evans, viz Mary, Elizabeth and Humphrey, whom died in their infancy. This stone also records the memory of the above named John Evans, (Mariner), who departed this life on the 7 th day of January 1833, in the 53rd year, of his age.

A faithful friend, husband dear, a loving father lieth here. Loss is great that we sustain, but Christ hath made our loss his gain. Here also lieth the body of Elizabeth, wife of the aforesaid, who died the 3rd of August 1816, aged 89. Here also lie the earthly remains of Elizabeth James, wife of Richard James, mariner, of Aberystwyth, who departed this transitory life on the first day of June 1824, aged 64 years.

In affectionate rememberance of Winifred Thomas, formerly of Rheidol Cottage in this parish, who died April 14th 1881, aged 78 years. Peace, perfect peace.

Winifred Thomas seems to have been a woman of independent means for she is recorded as such in the 1841 Census when she shared Pendre Cottage with a number of people. In the 1851 Census she is listed as an 'annuity' and living at Pendre Common with a servant.

In loving rememberance of David James, Padarn View, of this village, who entered into rest February 19th 1886, aged 59 years. I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness. Also of Winifred, beloved wife of the above named, who entered into rest April 15th 1899, aged 61 years. She hath done what she could. Also of Sarah, daughter of the above and Winifred his wife, who died in her infancy.

David James was born at Llanbadarn and his wife came from Penybontfawr, a village in Montgomeryshire. They had one son and four daughters; the son, David Lloyd James, was to be deputy town clerk at Barrow-in-Furness for 12 years and an important Freemason. The connection is obvious for David James ran the Monumental Works at Llanbadarn and was probably responsible for the engraving of many of the memorials in the Churchyard. David was the son of John and Margaret James who lived at Tanygraig, close to the works at Llangawsai. John was also a stonemason and worked for the same employers as his son.

Sacred to the memory of William Jones, Attorney at Law. For many years Town Clerk of the Borough of Aberystwyth. Endowed with talents of no ordinary kind and acting at all times under a deep sense of honour and integrity in his profession, he died as he had lived "in charity with all men" and beloved by all who knew him, July 6th 1832, aged 42. Also to the memory of Blandina, relict of the above named William Jones, who died 13th of March 1867, aged 84 years. "Enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Matthew 25.23.

William Jones was town clerk at Aberystwyth from 1808 until 1832. He was appointed by the Court Leet on an annual basis but the practice was to reappoint the same man as clerk for as long as he wanted the post. It would have been his duty to attend the Court Leet and carry out the various legal transactions required for which he would have earned about £30 a year. After William's death his wife Blandina, who was from Newtown, lived with her spinster sisters, Catherine, Harriet and Martha Pugh, at Queen Street.

And to the memory of his beloved brothers and sisters, viz William Jones, who died in London 21 Septr 1794, aged 18. Hubert Jones, who died at Calcutta 8th November 1811, aged 22. Anne Lloyd Davies, relict of John Hubert Lloyd Davies, of Lloyd Jack, Esqr., died 28th Decr 1805, aged 26. And Jane Jones, who died at Marington Hall, 1st Jany 1809, aged 24. This stone has been placed by the surviving and afflicted Parents, John and Catherine Jones, late of Penybont.

After her husband's death in 1839 Eleanor Humphreys, who was from Llanrhystud, brought up her daughter Mary at Heol y Fron in Llanbadarn. She worked as a cook and Mary was a dressmaker. There is a record in the Baptism Register of the Church of two sons of John and Eleanor Humphreys, Richard and John, who were baptised in June 1830 and the Census records another daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1829.

Here lieth tile body of David Jones of Llandovery, late (Coach man) Gogerddan, who died April 3rd 1837, aged 25 years. "O youth be wise in time, make God your early friend. To him devote your blooming prime, then peace shall be your end." This stone was erected by his affectionate sister Mary Jones.

It is probable that John Evans was a miner who lived with his wife, Anne, a dressmaker, and their children near the Waun. His eldest son, William, was a solicitor's clerk at the age of fifteen. He had two other sons and five daughters, including the twins Elizabeth and Sarah Jane.

Sacred to the memory of Anne Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Rowland Parry of Aberystwyth, who departed this life on Saturday, the 17th of March 1855, aged 75 years. This last tribute of deep and grateful affection has been erected by her only surviving daughter. "And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord' ." Rev 14.15. Also the memory of Jane, only daughter of the above named Rowland and Elizabeth Parry, who died 18th October 1862, aged 48 years.

It is probable that Anna Maria Parry, (see A25), was the first wife of the Rowland Parry memtioned above and after her death, in 1812, he married Anne Elizabeth. They were ironmongers with a shop in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth. It is presumed that the Jane mentioned above is Jane Lambert, a proprietor of houses, who was widowed early in life. She lived in North Parade with her aged parents until their death. Although not recorded it is presumed that Rowland Parry is also buried in this vault for the Aberystwyth Obsever reported, in January 1866, that his grand-daughter, Mary Anne Williams, was buried in the vault of the late Rowland Parry. The report continued that Mary Anne "has been for some time past meekly suffering under that treacherous disease common to delicate constitutions in this climate - consumption.”

Here lieth the body of William Davies, late of Aberystwyth, Glazier, who exchanged this transitory life for a better the 3rd day of March 1792, aged 57 years. Kind angels, watch this sleeping dust, Till Jesus comes to raise the just; Then may they vvake with sweet surprize, To meet their saviour in the skies. Also to the memory of the aforesaid Rees Felix, wlho departed this life the 15th day of August 1808, aged 56 years.

Sacred to the memory of Magdalene, the beloved and devoted wife of John Davies, Harbour Master, Aberystwyth, who departed this life November 12th 1870, in her 64th year. "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Phil.1.21. To the memory of the above named John Davies, who departed this life November 22nd 1874, in his 69th year. When the shore is won at last, who will count the billows past."

It seems to have the practice at Aberystwyth for experienced master mariners to be appointed to the post of harbour master and, unless they resigned, to hold the office until death.  John Davies follows this rule for he took the office in 1863 and held it until his death. He was the captain of the ship 'Magdalene', named after his wife, and lived on Marine Terrace when not at sea.

To the memory of Anne, the beloved wife of Richard Jones, late ironmonger of Aberystwyth, who died March 10th 1866, aged 53 years. She lived a consistent life, respected, beloved, was an affectionate wife and died regretted and deplored by all who knew her. Her sun is gone down, while it was yet day, In living splendours Anne shall rise, To meet her triumphed saviour in the skies. Also to the memory of the above named Richard Jones, who departed this life July 7th 1878. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm CXVI l5. Also lieth the remains of John Lewis, brother of the above named Anne Jones, who died in infancy.

Richard Jones was born in Cardigan but had moved to Aberystwyth before 1841 when he married Anne, a local girl. Their first home was in Great Darkgate Street above the ironmonger shop which Richard ran. There is no record of any children and after Anne's death Richard moved to Marine Terrace, where he lived with his widowed sister and her two daughters. Richard was very active in town affairs and was once a member of the Board of Guardians, the Commissioners and the Town Council. He was also a deacon with the Baptists.

(And even after destroying my skin, insects destroy this body, even so shall I see God in my flesh.)

The use of the different spellings of the surname and the house name is an interesting example of the general nature of spelling at a time when literacy was restricted to a percentage of the population. Fixed spelling was the exception rather than the rule. Another member of the Morris family of Clarach is mentioned in the narrative of A225.

Edward and his wife were from the parish of Llanfihangel Geneur Glyn and they had four daughters and a son: Anne, who died young; Margaret; Anne; Elizabeth and William. It was the custom that the farm, Bryncarnedd, would be inherited by the boy but when he died Margaret, who had left the farm to marry David Richards, returned and brought her husband with her. The farm was fairly large in 1851 when it consisted of 60 acres but Edward Jenkins had gradually expanded his holding to 74 acres by l871 when, aged 83, he was employing two men and a boy to work the land.

The Census of 1841 reveals that Dorothy also had a daughter, Ann, who was then 15; John, who died in 1850, was a shipwright while Dorothy is described as 'Independent'.

The farm of Glanrafon was part of the Nanteos estate and had been leased to the father of David in 1788. It was a fairly extensive farm for the rent was £40 annually plus two hens and 40 eggs at Shrovetide (or 10 pence in lieu); there was no requirement, however, to perform that other relic of feudalism, labour services. A condition of the lease was that 40 teals of lime would be spread on the fields annually.

Evan Levas came from a sea-faring family for his father was a mariner in old age. The family lived in High Street and consisted of four boys and three girls.

There were three Joseph families in Aberystwyth during the Nineteenth Century but this seems to be the most firmly established. William, who died in 1833 was probably the grandfather of Jane. Jane's mother, Elizabeth, is described as a washerwoman in the 1841 Census, and more kindly as a laundress in the Census of 1871. Her children were William, a cabinet maker; David and John, shoemakers; Owen, a moulder and Jane, a dressmaker, who also kept house for her cobbler brothers in Northgate street.

Rowland Arnold was a labourer who lived at Crynfryn Row, Aberystwyth, with his wife Ann, and his two children, Ann and Thomas. The family then moved to Baker Street until Rowland's death. Ann then became a housekeeper for her nephew Rowland Morgan, a draper in Little Darkgate Street, now knovm as Eastgate Street; her daughter was a dressmaker and her son a painter.

John Williams was born in Lampeter and began his working life as an agricultural labourer. About 1850 he married Mary Thomas, the daughter of John and Catherine Thomas of Commins Coch. It was then usual for newly married couples to live with their in-laws until they found a place of their own so John and his wife stayed with his father-in-law and his wife and five children. Later in life John Williams moved to a small house on Waunfawr with his wife and four of his children, William, Jemima, Catherine and Thomas, while he worked as a miner.

John Thomas worked as an agricultural labourer for most of his life. He was born at Llansantfraed in Cardiganshire and lived with his wife, Catherine, and their childrerl at Commins Coch. In addition to the daughter, Jane, recorded above, they were Mary, who married John Williams (see A124 ); John, a lead miner; Anne; David, a shoemaker; Jane and Margaret.

John Evans was born in 1804, the son of Gruffydd and Mary Evans of Tymawr, Merionethshire, into a family that traced it's descent from Meurig, Prince of Dyfed. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and entered business as a draper in Bridge Street, Aberystwyth, and became Mayor of the towm in l842 and 1844. In 1830 he married Elizabeth (though she liked to be called Eliza ), the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Pugh of Abermad, who are reputed to have provided their daughter with a dowry of gold sovereigns equal to her weight. Her brother was Lewis Pugh who succeeded to the Abermad estate but died without an heir and the estate passed to one of his sister's sons, Lewis Pugh. The Aberystwyth Observer reported that "Industry and honesty were the characteristics of his career throughout life; and in dying he _ leaves behind him no single blot upon his memory.”

John and Eliza Evans had six children: John Pugh, who entered holy orders and became Rector of Efenchydd, Ruthin; Lewis Pugh, see below; Griffith Humphrey Pugh, see below; David Pugh Jones, at one time curate of Borth; Elizabeth, who became the wife of the Revd. H.P. Edwards of Caerleon, Gwent, and Mary Margaret. In 1843 the family moved to Llanbadarn when John Evans acquired the 220 acre Lovesgrove estate from the Powells of Nanteos. The family motto is 'Duw Gadwo Brain' (God protect the Ravens) and the coat of arms features a raven surrounded by three snakes . When John Evans died in 1874 the Lovesgrove estate passed to his third son.

Lewis Pugh Evans, the second son of John Evans, changed his name to Lewis Pugh Pugh in order to inherit the extensive Abermad estae from his bachelor uncle Lewis Pugh. He was born at Aberystwyth on the 3rd of August 1837 and was educated at Winchester School, and at Oxford University, after which he went to India to follow his career as a barrister. He had a distinguished career in India becoming the leading figure of the Calcutta Bar, Advocate General of Bengal, and a member of the Governor General's Council.

Lewis Pugh Pugh met his wife, Veronica Herriet Hills, while travelling out to Bombay. She was going out to be married but became attached to Lewis instead and they were married at Calcutta Cathedral. They were to have five sons and four daughters. In 1872 Lewis Pugh Pugh built the present house at Abermad to a design by J. P. Seddon and, in 1873, he was High Sheriff for Cerdiganshire. He was also Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace, when in 1880 he won a seat in Parliament, as a Liberal, representing Cardiganshire. He left Parliament in 1885 and returned to Calcutta where he lived, except for a visit to Wales in 1907, until his death on January 4th 1908, at 2, Theatre Road. The Calcutta Statesman reported that "professionally and socially Mr Pugh has been a prominent figure in Calcutta for a period beyond the memory of all save the few who survive him, and he never made one enemy. His death is one more reminder that the age of giants has passed away and the day of mediocrity davmed." His remains were cremated and interred at Llanbadarn, the first cremated body deposited there.

Veronica Harriet Pugh, known locally as Mrs 'Evans' Pugh, made 19 voyages to India and was instrumental in founding the 'Women's Friendly Society' at Calcutta. After her husband's death she returned to Wales and her residence at Maesnant, Glandyfi, where she formed the 'Glandyfi and Llancynfelin Nursing Association' to provide a village nurse.

Sir Griffi th Humphrey Pugh Evans was born in Aberystwyth in 1840 and was educated at Bradfield College, and at Lincoln College, Oxford, where he gained a M.A. He studied medicine in London for a while but found law more to his liking and was called to the bar at Lincoln Inn in 1867, leaving shortly after for Calcutta. He had a distinguished career in India, serving on the Viceroy's Legislative Council, and being created a Knight Commander of the Indian Empire in 1896.

Sir Griffith was married to Emilia Savi, the sister of Veronica Harriet, and daughter of Mr James Hills of Neechindegore, Bengal, an indigo planter, at Llanilar on September 4th, 1873. They spent many years in India and had three sons and four daughters ( see Section E ). Sir Griffith was Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace and when his health failed he retired from India to live on the Lovesgrove estate which he had inherited in 1874. A fluent Welsh speaker and an enthusiastic Welshman he was once advised by his physicians to visit some German watering place but chose to visit Llandrindod instead.

Emilia Savi was active in the work of local organisations. She formed the Aberystwyth and Llanbadarn District Nursing Association in 1899, and helped to establish the Alltymynydd Sanatorium; she was President of the Mothers Union, the Girls Friendly Society and the Women's Section of the Aberystwyth Branch of the British Legion as well as working for the Soldiers and Sailors Families Association. The Cambrian News adds "Perhaps her many friends will think her personality her best claim on our memories. It was not what she did but what she was.”

David Morgan was born in Llanilar and became a farmer at the 38 acre farm of Bwlchbach. His family consisted of his wife Mary, and these children: Margaret; David; Morgan, a shoemaker; Thomas and James, twins; William; and Evan. The death of his wife and children seems to have led David to give up the farm and to move to Penparcau. There is a newspaper report on his death. It states that “A labourer named David Morgan, living at Penparkau, dropped dovm and suddenly expired on Tuesday afternoon, October 8th. Deceased was at work at Tanybank, near his home, and had just ceased thrashing some corn to partake of tea, when he dropped down and died. He was seventy six years of age.” All I can say is thank goodness for the old age pension!

The Old Black Lion was a coaching inn built about 1700 in Bridge Street. In 1801, according to George Eyre Evans, "It was the birthplace and home during boyhood of John Lloyd Davies, a man who, by dint of perseverance and determination, raised himself from a humble position to one of great dignity, nor stayed not in his honourable career till he had become the leader of the Cardiganshire Tories, and represented our boroughs in Parliament for a time."

Thomas Jenkins and his wife lived at Brynrodyn; he was born in London and worked as an agricultural labourer. They had five sons and one daughter, their first born, Maryann, above.

Elizabeth White was the widow of Thomas White, who is buried at St. Michaels Churchyard, Aberystwyth, a shoemaker. They lived at Shipbuilders Row, now South Road, with their children: William, a joiner; George, a shoemaker; Elizabeth; Gwynne, a ship's carpenter; Ann, a dressmaker and David, a joiner. After her husband's death Elizabeth moved to Prospect Row supported by her children.

John Edwards was a carpenter and with his wife ran the Gogerddan Arms. He appears to have had nine children: Anne, Thomas William; John William; David; Evan; Mary; Roderick; Edward and Richard.

John Rowlands, a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, came from Llancynfelin and lived at Portland Street with his wife and three children, John Jones, Mary Elizabeth and Thomas.

Here lieth the body of Roderick Richards, Tawer. Memorable, at least to the present generation, for an unconmon share of honesty, paiety, charity, industry and benevolence. Among other instances of a disposition truly Christian, he, by will, bequeathed to the people of this parish the interest of 104 pounds for ever. Reader reflect, go and do thou likewise. He departed this life July 10th 1752, aged 61.

A tawer was an early word used to describe someone in the tanning trade and Roderick Richards would have been fairly prosperous to have left £104 to the Church in order that the interest would be used to benefit the parishioners. The usual practice was to invest the money and use the interest to provide a schoolmaster for the parish; such charity schools did some good in encouraging literacy amongst the poor. In this case the money was loaned to a Mr Lloyd for the Vestry of July 14th 1764 records this minute:

Whereas application has been made to the Parishioners of this Parish in behalf of Mr. Lloyd of Cringae for the loan of a sum of money; it is ordered and agreed at this Vestry that one hundred and four pounds (being a legacy bequeathed by Roderick Richards, deceased, to the Poor of this Parish) be lent to the said Mr Lloyd on his giving a proper bond and security for the same.

The interest from the maney was used to pay "the schoolmaster at Llanbadarnfawr for teaching the children of the Charity of the said Parish". In March 1773 the monies were recalled from Mr Lloyd for the Vestry records as an expense "Messenger to call upon Mr Lloyd of Cringae to pay 84£ Charity lent - 7/0". After that the various charity monies were then lent to a Herbert Lloyd for the Vestry of March 30th, 1810

Ordered that the Rev. David Griffiths, Vestry Clerk, be directed to write to Herbert Lloyd, Esq., and request him to appoint a day for the payment of 140 Guineas Charity Money left in the hands of the late Reverend Richard Lloyd and which money Mr Lloyd ordered in his will to be paid forthwith after his decease.

Having reclaimed the monies the Vestry then allowed the Vicar to take charge of it but kept a watchful eye on the whereabouts of the bequests. In June 1829 the £140 was placed in the hands of the Curate, the Revd. John Hughes, and invested with the Cardiganshire Turnpike Trust in order to help them build a new road from Tyn y llidiart to Eistedfa Gurig. It would then seem that the money remained with the Trust for most of the Nineteenth Century before being transferred to the School Board.

Sacred to the memory of Capt John. Lewis, Senior, many years Master Mariner, and subsequently Harbour Master of the port of Aberystwyth. He died the 2nd day of January 1827, in the 88th year of his age. Also in memory of Catherine, his second wife, eldest daughter of William Pugh of Peniarth Ganol in the County of Merioneth who predeceased him. Two of their children are also interred in this ground: David, and Catherine, who was married to Humphrey Edwards, who died August 2nd 1844. Near this spot lie the remains of Elwyn Owen, sister of Mrs John Lewis, and widow of Richard Owen, Mariner.

John Lewis was Harbour Master at Aberystwyth from October 1808 until April 1819 when he resigned at the age of 80 when the port was about the third biggest in Wales. One of his daughters, Elizabeth, married Thomas Hughes of Hendrefelin, who was High Sheriff of Cardigan in 1760, and after his death she married John Parry. Their son, John Thomas Herbert Parry, of Glanpaith, Aberystwyth, Town Clerk and Freeman of the Borough of Aberystwyth, died in 1883 and is buried at Llanbadarn.

Richard and Ellen (Eleanor) Humphreys lived at Windmill Court, Aberystwyth, in 1851. The Court, an enclosed area at the top of Eastgate Street, was once the site of a windmill used to grind corn during the early Eighteenth Century. It was last used for this purpose about 1740 and the machinery used to build the Morfa Mill, at Tanybwlch (see D106 – 109). The windmill was converted into four dwellings and enclosed by houses built around it and occupied by a variety of tradesmen. Richard was a shoemaker and some of his neighbours were glovers, tailors, boatmen and one, John Thomas, aged 70, was the Bell Man.

It was difficult for widows to survive in the Nineteenth Century without a child on whom to rely and when old age lessened their ability to work there was only one source of help and that was the parish overseer who provided poor relief. Due to her age Elizabeth Parry was a pauper in 1851 but was able to live in the village rather than enter the dreaded workhouse, then about a decade old.

Rees Peters was a master shoemaker employing four men at his works in Queen Street, Aberystwyth, where he lived with his wife Jane, who was from Towyn, and his six children in 1861. Another child, Edwin, was born after the death of Thomas in 1863.

Here lieth the body of Mary Lewis, wife of John Lewis, Bathing man of. Aberystwyth, who died 20th of January 1822, aged 37 years.

The Lewis family of Aberystwyth are closely linked with the development of the town as a resort. It would seem that the family first became involved in the business of bathing about the end of the Eighteenth Century. In 1801 there were four machines available at Aberystwyth. The machines were made of wood and looked rather like a small shed on four wheels. Patrons would change in the machines into their bathing costumes and step into the sea for the bathing machines would be wheeled to the water's edge by horses. These machines were placed opposite where the Belle Vue Hotel is today for the ladies., while gentlemen would be expected to use the machine on Bath Rocks, opposite the present County Offices. These machines were probably run by Lewis and Sarah Lewis. Lewiis Lewis died in December 1831 and is buried at st. Michael's Churchyard, Aberystwyth, where his gravestone describes him as 'bathing man'.

The business was taken over by his son John Lewis, whose first wife, Mary, is buried at Llanbadarn (see A232). It was at this time that the 'New Aberystwyth Guide' of 1824, written by T. J. L. Pritchard described the bath house run by the Lewis family:

About the centre of the Terrace is a small building called the Warm Bath House. The baths here, (two in number), are of a humble description, lined with wood, and the water carried to them in buckets. A little northerly, on the beach, stand the Bathing Machines, built on the same principle as the generality of those at Margate and Brighton, and equal to the best of them. Bathers may be accomodated at low water, at five or six yards from the edge of the shore, and at high water, three.

John Lewis died in December 1851 and is buried at st Michael's with his second wife, Elizabeth, who died in 1864. Their son was Lewis Levds (see A228) who was a carpenter as well as proprietor of bathing machines. He married Elizabeth at Bath in Somerset, and there their first two children were born. The family lived at the Neptune Inn, which is now known as the Boars Head, for most of the Nineteenth Century. In the hollow between Penbryn-Diodde and Victoria Terrace Lewis Lewis kept his bathing machines. In 1864 the Aberystwyth Guide, written by T.O. Morgan (see H81) described the Lewis bath house:

About the centre of the Terrace, at No 14, is another establishment, called the Old Warm Bath House, which is fitted up with every regard to comfort and cleanliness, and where every civility and attention is shown. Warm, tepid and shower baths are provided on the shortest notice.

Lewis Lewis died in 1868 and the business was taken over by three of his sons. They were Watkin, William John and Lewis and like their father all three were excellent swimmers for they frequently went to the rescue of bathers in difficulties at the risk of their own lives.

Watkin Lewis married another Elizabeth (see A225) and they had 8 sons and a daughter; but tragedy overcame the family. The daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was passionately fond of flowers and often went, on expeditions to collect them. On Saturday, May 21st, 1881, she started over Constitution Hill with her younger brother and a friend. On the way the six year old Elizabeth fell over Waunfach, a drop of about sixty feet, and landed on her head which was 'smashed in the most distressing manner'. She was picked off the beach by Lewis Morris who took her to his cottage at Glanydon, Clarach, where she died. "The little girl had flowers by her side when I picked her up from the sea-shore," Lewis Morris told the inquest. The next year her mother died and her father, Watkin, emigrated to New Jersey with his surviving sons.

Richard Griffiths began his working life as an agricultural labourer and by the end of his life had managed to become a farmer, or rather a tenant on a farm. Agricultural labourers served a kind of probation on various farms establishing a reputation for hard work and farming expertise before approaching a landlord to ask for a farm of their own. Richard and Mary appear to have had six children including Margaret, above, and Jane, (see A24).

Here lieth the body of Thomas Griffiths of Penglanowen, who departed this life the 22nd of March 1855, aged 83 years.

The farm of Penglanowen was part of the Nanteos estate and was leased to the Griffiths family in May 1774. The lease was taken by Richard Griffiths for three lives, that is for eachof the individuals named on the lease. In return the family paid an annual rent of ten guineas and were obliged, on penalty of a £3 fine, to spread 30 teals of lime on the land. In addition the family had to perform certain services to the Powells as their landlords, a hangover from feudal obligations. Each Shrovetide two hens and 40 eggs had to be presented and, at Whitsun, eight chickens, to the Lord of the Manor. The tenant also had to perform labour services for eight days for which, of course, he would not be paid. At Penglanowen Thomas Griffiths, the son of Richard, would be required to work two days harrowing, two days carrying muck, two days loading corn and two days reaping, at Nanteos. Finally the family were required to use the mill owned by the Powells to grind their grain.

David Beynon was a tailor from the village of Llanarth who lived in High Street, Aberystwyth with his wife, Mary, and their seven children of whom John Rees, was the second child.
