Here lieth the body of Elizabeth, wife of David Humphreys, Coachman, of Aberystwyth, who died 3rd of June 1876, aged 69 years. Also of the above David Humphreys. Died 29th of Oct 1885 aged 80.

David Humphreys lived at Crynfryn Row with his wife, Elizabeth. The Row was built along the cliff at the end of the garden of Crynfryn House about 1797 by Sir Thomas Bonsall. Elizabeth was a charwoman while David seems to have had a variety of occupations as he is described as a labourer, a gentleman's servant and a coachman.

My plant did flourish. fair, like to a rose in June. But death with his cold blast, has cropt my tender bloom. Also to the memory of Sophia Evans, daughter of the above named Thomas + Margaret Evans, who died September 1st 1840, aged 24 years.

Here lie the earthly remains of James Evans, son of James and Elizabeth Evans, of Llangawsai in this parish, who departed this life on the 31st day of October 1837, aged 7 years. Also Thomas Evans, son of the above named James and Elizabeth Evans, who died on the 8th day of January 1840, aged 14 years.

From the Baptism Register of Llanbadarn Fawr it is clear that James Evans, as was so often the case in Llangawsai, was a tanner who farmed a few acres in order to feed his five children.

In loving rememberance of Morris Jones, Coachbuilder, of Aberystwyth, who de­parted this life on the 14th day of January 1878, aged 74 years. "But my kin­dness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my people be removed."

Morris Jones, from Llanbadarn Fawr, began life as a carpenter in Moor street, Aberystwyth, where he lived with his wife Elizabeth, and their seven children. Moor Street was laid out in 1815 as Waterloo Street, in honour of the victory, against Napoleon, and is now known as Cambrian Street. The family then moved to Little Darkgate Street, now Eastgate, where Morris described himself as a coachbuilder, before returning to Moor Street.

Sacred to the memory of William Williams, the Agent of Gogerddan, who departed this life January 14th 1860, aged 60 years. Dyddiau dyn sydd fel glaswelltyn megis blodeuyn y maes y torrir ef ymai …

(... the days of man are like the grass and flowers of the field, they wither away.)

The agent of Gogerddan was responsible for the daily routine on various economic activities engaged in by the Pryse family. He would be mainly concerned with running the home farm and supervising the activities of the estate's tenants. Most agents were well meaning and in sympathy with the tenants and this seems to be the case with William Williams. At the time of his death he was a Churchwarden and the manager of Penyfron School and left a sum of money, amounting to £188.4.4d., to the school. This money was later used, along with other bequests, to set up the 'Llanbadarn Fawr Educational Foundation' and was used to provide scholarships at the local secondary school, Ardwyn.

(In memory of Richard Edwards of Aberystwyth, who died July 7th, 1876. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Also of Mary, wife of the above Richard Edwards, who died Christmas day 1879, aged 82 years. Christ is alive for me and death is my gain.)

Richard Edwards, who died at the age of 80, came from Llanbadarn Fawr, and lived at Shipbuilder's Row (now part of South Road), Aberystwyth, where he worked as a baker, with his wife and daughter, Catherine, in 1871.

David Humphreys, as Dafydd is referred to in the Census of 1851, was a stonemason who lived with his wife and son, James, a stonemason like his father, close to the centre of the village.

Sophia Ann Jones, like her husband David, a tailor, came from Llanfihangel Geneur Glyn, and lived at Union street, Aberystwyth, with her daughter, Ann, before her early death.

The beloved son of David and Mary Humphreys of Llainygawsai, who departed this life the 19th day of June 1880, aged 24 years. Search the Scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me. John V.39.

David Humphreys spent all his life living at Llangawsai where he, and his wife, Mary, raised nine children. He was a stonemason.

In loving memory of Jane, wife of William Davies, Gray's Inn Lane, Aberystwyth, who died November 6th 1873, aged 52 years. Also of the above named William Davies, who died February 4th 1875, aged 50 years. Watch therefore for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh. Also Enoch, son of the above named, who lost his life through the wreck of the S.S. Greystoke on the Grongogal Sands, while on a voyage from Odessa to Hamburg, Nov 30th 1892, aged 37 years. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, Yea, than the missty waves of the sea.

William Davies, who was from the village of Penuwch, worked as an ostler in 1871 having been a horsekeeper in earlier life. He lived for a while in Queen street and had three children, Harriet, Enoch and Eleanor.

(In memory of Margaret Griffiths, daughter of James and Ann Griffiths of Cefnllwyd in this parish, who died April 6th, 1872, aged 9 years. This fair flower did not blossom and was removed so quickly, but rose to show how beautiful are the flowers of the garden of life.)

Also of James Hughes, son of, the above named David Hughes and Margaret his wife. He was lost at sea off Land's End during a gale on the 9th of March 1881, aged 15 years. He is gone the rough billows have swept him avvay. The waves of the ocean is the tome of his clay; no marble or stone can be placed on the spot but while we shall live he shall ne'er be forgot.

Near my grave man contemplates now. And remember when near my damp bed that you are close to eternity. Also James Edwards, who died Feb 8th, 1880, aged 82 years. Also Catherine Edwards, who died Nov l3th, 1883, aged 86 years.)

James and Catherine Edwards had seven children and spent their working lives as shoemakers until, in old age, James became a labourer.

Thou pale consumption gavest me fatal blow, thy stroke was certain tho' the effects were slow. With wasting pain God saw us long oppress'd, relieved our pain and kindly gave us rest. Thus! Thus it is! We all must tread the gloomy regions of the dead. Nor bloom of youth nor age can stave, our mortal bodies from the grave.

(Here lies the earthly remains of Morgan Edwards, shoemaker of this village, who died November 1st 1820, aged 29.)

Evan Hubert, or Herbert as he is referred to elsewhere, farmed over 33 acres at Penbrynodin with his son. Farming, though, was only one way of making a living for Evan, as with many of his contemporaries, also found employment in the lead mining industry. Many of the farmers owned wagons and horses and the miners needed their lead brought to Aberystwyth; the result was that many farmers, like Evan, became carriers of lead ore. In the mid 1840's these men were frequently to be found protesting against the high charges levied by the Turnpike Trusts who had care of the roads and, indeed, such protests became violent in the disturbances known as the Rebecca Riots. The ' Welshman', of September 1843, repeated that a meeting had taken place at Aberystwyth to protest against the high toIls at which many spoke in Welsh, including Evan:

“Evan Herbert of Llanbadarn, he is a carrier of Lead Ore. Complains of the back carriage. Loses several pounds a year by It …..He is 85 years of age. Has been a carrier 60 years, and has never experienced the hardships of these turnpikes as much as he does now. The complainant then wondered where all the turnpike money went.”

It would appear that Lewis Lewis gave up farming about 1860 and moved to Abe­rystwyth where he took lodgings at an inn in Church Street, opposite the Old Assembly Rooms, until his death. He was, presumably, the son of Richard and Mary Lewis, above.

Parry, (loan dderwen o Fôn); John J. Parry (Brith yr alaw) died April 15th, 1875, aged 16 years; Ellen J. Parry, died June 12th, 1875, aged 9 weeks; James E. Parry, died March 31st 1876, aged 12 years; Robert W. Parry, died January 17th, 1877, aged 10 years. O fond children, their journey to their end was tiresome because of illness; their perfect music expressed their love of their Father in a new language. “Because the creatures wait eagerly for a sight of the children of God." )

John Parry came from Anglesey as his bardic name, Ioan dderwen o Fôn, indicates. Soon after his marriage to Margaret he lived at Portland Lane and earned his living as a shoemaker. As his family increased to eight children they moved to Northgate Street and John Parry found work as a rural messenger.

Anne was born at Shipbuilders Row, Aberystwyth, the fourth child of Thomas and Margaret Watkins. Her father was a ship's carpenter at a time when work was brisk in the yards just off the Row. Later the family moved to nearby Penmaesglas Road.

John and Sarah Jenkins appear to have had ten children. They began their married life at Tre'rhig, a small farm, but moved about 1835 to Troedrhiwlasgrug, a farm of 72 acres where in 1851, three of the boys helped their father to farm.

Thomas Samuel was amongst the leading farmers close to the village centre. He farmed about 47 acres in a number of plots to the east of the village. Most of this land was leased from James Hughes and subject to a tithe of £5.15.0d in 1846.

Edward Thomas was born in the village of Llanbadarn Fawr but moved to Market Street, Aberystwyth, where he ran an inn and worked as a carrier. He raised five daughters, Ann, Mary, Sophia, Margaret and Jane; Ann took over the inn while the other daughters became dressmakers.

William Lewis lived in the outlying village of Penparcau in 1841 with his wife and five children. He was a wheelwright and as such would have been more prosperous than many of his neighbours who were mostly agricultural labourers.

Anne and Mary Thomas were the daughters of Edward Thomas (see B91). They were brought up in an inn in Market street, Aberystwyth, and Anne took over it's running when her parents were aged. Mary, like her sisters, made her living from dressmaking.

John Williams was born in the parish of Llanychaiarn and married to Mary Anne, born in Llanbadarn. They first lived at Prospect Row, Aberystwyth, when John was a ship's carpenter; then they moved to Torglwyd Cottage, and finally to Loveden Cottage, when John describes himself as a 'house carpenter'. They had seven children.

Rees Rees, plasterer of Aberystwyth, came from Llanarth and was married to Anne, who was born at Caernarvon. They originally lived at Thespian Street and then in North Parade. They had six children, one of whom, Robert, beacme a jeweller. Another son, Rees, followed his father's example and became a plasterer. He married Mary and they lived in Terrace Road where they ran the 'Bull and Mouth Inn'; they had four children in 1871. It is interesting to note that while the memorial to the parent, born in a rural village in South Cardiganshire is in Welsh, that to the son, born in a town, is in English.

Morgan Morgans or Morgan as he is frequently referred to in other records, lived on Llanbadarn Square, close to the road to Goginan, in a house rented from the Gogerddan estate. He was a carpenter and wheelwright and, in 1851, employed five men, two of whom stayed in his house, and two maids, one of whom was described as 'Maid of all works'. He was the largest employer of labour living in the village. In 1841, shortly after his first wife, Jane, died, he is recorded as living at the same house with his sons David, Edward and John, and his two daughters, Mary and Ann. There is no trace of the surviving children in the Census for Llanbadarn Fawr for 1851, though it does record that Morgan had remarried.

Thomas Samuel married Elizabeth Jones, the daughter of William Jones, a long established spinner, who worked in one of a row of cottages on the left hand side of the road through Llangawsai on the way to Llanbadarn. Thomas and Elizabeth had four children, Elizabeth, Jane, Henry and Ellen, who was born a day or two before her father died. On the death of Thomas his wife moved to live with her father William and her brother John, and acted as their housekeeper.

In 1901 Henry Samuel, an old man by then, was engaged in conversation by George Eyre Evans who referred to him as 'Old Samuel , weaver' and noted down his words. Henry explained that the house in which he worked had been built by his grandfather, William Jones, when he had married about the mid-1790's. He recalled that before his grandfather got married it was the custom for home brewing, (‘darllaw curw') to begin about 6 to 12 months before the day. His grandfather's wedding feast (‘gwledd briodas') began in the cottage two months before the wedding day and "often did the ale get to the heads of the people, who dance'd and froliced in the Cottage to such an extent that the newly laid earthen floor was churned to liquid mud, one foot thick!” Henry Samuel then explained that on the wedding day the custom of hiding the bride was observed. According to this the bride was hidden, say in a press or a coffin, and the young men had to find her and take her to the Church. She was escorted to the Church at Llanbadarn at 11 a.m. by over a hundred dancing lads and lasses, some of whom wore Welsh hats. Music at the wedding was provided by a fiddler named Simon, who usually played at weddings in Llanbadarn in return for a bit of refreshment; in fact he was fond of his drink and is said to have drowned in a pool by Penybont Bridge, hence Pwll Simon.

Henry Samuel also recalled that it was the custom at Llanbadarn for the young men to spend Sundays and Christmas Day at Cae Halog, a field close to the present railway crossing, in various games. Sometimes other young men from the neighbouring parishes, as far as Llanrhystud, would come to fight with the Llanbadarn lads. They fought with swords and double pointed sticks and played one game known as ‘torri eleddyf Arthur' (snapping Arthurs sword), which involved turning a somersault in the air while hanging on to a bar.

Anne Jones was the daughter of Margaret Jones who was widowed shortly after her birth. Margaret Jones was from Newcastle Emlyn and, after her husband's death, stayed at her father-in-law's with her three children.

David Jones began work as an agricultural labourer soon after his marriage. He had four daughters. By 1851 he lived at Llangawsai and worked as a farm bailiff and twenty years later was a tenant farmer, presumably at Plascrug Farm on the Nanteos estate, farming 70 acres.

Lumley Ellis was born, as was his wife, at Cwmrheidol and worked as a lead miner; he was married at the age of nineteen, as was his wife, which was fairly unusual among the farming folk but not amongst the mine workers who were earning 'good' wages at an early age and so could afford early marriage.

The Baptism Register of Llanbadarn records that Duncan was baptised on November llth, 1861, when he was a month old. It was then the practice for children to be baptised after the mid-morning Sunday service. A later entry records the baptism of his sister Carolina and describes his father as a 'woodman' from Crygie.

John Richards was a carrier who lived at Ducks Lane, an area of small houses, in 1871 with Sarah, his daughter. He had four daughters; Ann, Elinor, Sarah and Jane. The Aberystwyth Observer of April 1865 carried this report:

As Mr John Richards, of Llanbadarn, was returning with his van from Goginan, on Monday night, where he had been taking passengers from the market in this town, he fell from his seat, fracturing his jaw and breaking his leg, from the effects of which injuries he died on Thursday evening.

In the Census of 1871 Anne Thomas, described as a widow, lived at Little Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth with her daughter Hannah, son Wiliam, and granddaughter Ann Maria Neal.

Griffith Edward, son of the late William Edward of Aberystwyth, was born on the 30th of June 1786, and died on the 2nd of November 1845. This stone marks the spot where his remains are deposited, fulfilling the spiritual text of ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Also of Anne, his wife. Born on the 7th of July 1792. Died on the 21st of January 1851.

Griffith Edward lived in Llanbadarn with his wife Ann, and his three daughters, Elizabeth, Ann and Margaret. He was a chandler, a dealer in candles, oils, soaps and groceries.

Rowland Hughes came from Machynlleth and worked as an agricultural labourer in 1841. He had five children: William, John, Margaret, Elizabeth and Ann. In 1871 he worked as a tanner and lived with his youngest daughter.

In pain and sickness long laid, my flesh consumed, my lungs decayed. I, like a flower, once did bloom, but now lay mould'ring in this tomb.

Thomas and Margaret Jones had five children. Thomas was a tanner and part-time farmer. Staying with them in 1851 was John Jones, from Llangeler, who was the Curate of Llanbadarn Fawr.

Evan Hughes was three weeks old when the Census of 1871 was taken. His father and mother were from Montgomeryshire where his elder sister, two year old Mary was also born. John Hughes was a labourer.

(In loving memory of Thomas Rees of Penparke, who died November 30th, 1863, aged 65 years. Also Evan, his son, who died April 29th, 1895, aged 69 years. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh.)

Thomas and Elinor Rees had four sons: Evan, Morgan, John and David. Thomas was an agricultural labourer and Morgan became a miner. Evan joined the 63rd Regiment and was posted to India where he was actively engaged in dealing with the Indian Mutiny of 1857-9, for which he received the medal and clasp. In 1864 he volunteered to join the 69th Regiment and served in that unit until his discharge in 1867, having completed over 21 years armed service. He returned to Penparcau and worked for a while at Crygie, a farm of 126 acres, as an agricultural servant.

To the memory of Ann Morgan, the beloved wife of Evan Morgan, Malster, Trefechan, Aberystwyth, he died February 14th 1874, aged 31 years.

In 1871 Evan Morgan, described as a labourer, lived at Spring Garden, Trefechan, with Ann and their four children. Brewing was an important industry in Trefechan and it is not surprising that Evan found work as a malster.

Janes Edward, son of the above Lewis and Elizabeth Pugh, born at Tyllwyd, Llanfarian, Sep 22 1857, died Jan 7 1858.

Like a flower she bl­ossomed and was cut down down, not staying but fading away like a shadow. Also the above named John Jones, who died February 24th, 1886, aged 63 years. For me to live is Christ and to die is gain. Also in memory of Mary Jones, beloved wife of the above John Jones, who died Jan 5th, 1894, aged 68 years.)

John Edwards, a shoemaker, lived with his wife and five children at Poplar Row, all his married life. In 1871, when some of the children had left home, rooms were let to tenants one of whom, Lewis Evans, is buried at Llanbadarn, see G58.

The Aberystwyth Observer reported in September 1858: “The deceased it appears, arrived in the town on Saturday last, as a visitant, and on Wednesday last, as was her usual habit, she retired to her bedroom after dinner, about 3 o'clock; and about half-past five, on a person preceeding to the bedroom, deceased was found lying on the ground quite dead.”
