Here lie the remains of Jane Rees, neice of Mrs Evans, late of Penygraig, and daughter of Thomas Rees, Shopkeeper of Llanbadarntrefeglwys of this County, who departed this life at Aberystwyth, the 8th day of June, 1814, in the 11th year of her age.

Sacred to the memory of Mr John Evans, late of Penygraig in the parish of Llanbadarn, who departed this life the 14th day of May, 1833, aged 68 years. Also to the memory of Jane Evans, his wife, who departed this life on the 11th of August 1821, aged 62 years.
It is a possibility that John Evans was part owner of the Banc y Ddafad Ddu, (the Black Sheep Bank), The Aberystwyth and Tregaron Bank, which was set up in 1810 and collapsed in 1814.

Here also are deposited the remains of the above named William Edwards, who departed this life on the 6th day of June 1795, aged 71 years. Also Wm Edwards, saddler, son of the above Wm Edwards, who died 12th August 1819, aged 33 years.

Near this place lie the earthly remains of five children of Thomas James of Aberystwyth, mariner, by Elizabeth, his wife, who died as follows: Thomas, Elizabeth, Margaret and Bridget died in their infancy; Mary died in the sixth year of her age. Kind angels watch these sleeping dust, till Jesus comes to raise the just. Then may they wake with sweet surprize, and in their Saviour image rise. Also in memory of Margaret, the wife of Andrew Riddell, Aberystwyth. She fell asleep in Christ 3rd October 1868, aged 64. And also of the above named Andrew Riddell, who died February 5th 1876, aged 74. And Elizabeth, daughter of the above, who died October 4th 1874, aged 37.

David Roberts was a barber and hairdresser who lived in Corporation Street, Aberystwyth, with his wife, Elizabeth, and children, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth (‘Betsey') and Sarah, in 1851.

Isaac Jones was a smith at Llanbadarn Fawr in 1841 with his home in St Mary Street, Aberystwyth, (now part of Terrace Road), where he lived with his wife Margaret, and his sons Enoch and John In 1851 and 1871 Isaac Jones, by then a 'master smith' employing three men, lived at Llanbadarn, opposite the Black Lion Inn, adjacent to which stood his smithy.

Jenkin Richards was a mason who lived in Penparcau in 1841, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, David, Richard and Jane. In both the 1841 and 1851 Census the family surname is spelt 'Richard'.

Er coffadwriaeth am Richard Jones, Aberystwyth, yr hwn a fu farw Mawrth 27, 1871, yn 89 mlwydd oed. Bu yn ddiacon ffyddlon yn eglwys y Tabernacle, am 53ain o flynyddoedd. Coffadwriaeth geyfrawn sydd fendigedig.
Richard Jones was a shoemaker who lived at Chalybeate Terrace, Aberystwyth, with his widowed mother for most of his life. There is an account of the 'Old Deacons of Tabernacle' in one of the local newspapers which mentions Richard Jones. It reads "R.J. (often known as Richard Dafydd Shôn from his father), was brought up under the Christian influence of his father's house, but he early began to lead a prodigal's life, both at home and in London. In time, however, he became convinced of the evil of his way, and felt the great change, and, like the prodigal son, he returned home, and was elected deacon. The Old Methodists were very careful usually not to elect as deacons men who had led notoriously bad lives. The Rev. Eben. Richards felt strongly on this point. But everybody was satisfied that Richard Jones had become a new man. He was a terror to evil-doers. His ministry was one of fire; he thundered as from Sinai on careless religionists. It was often well to have Edward Samuel to pour oil on the troubled waters excited in the Seiat. On one occasion he became so personal in admonishing a young lady at the Seiat, and was so severe in his censure on fashionable dressing that the young lady told him to mind his own business. “What did she say?" said Richard Shan, (whose hearing was not of the best) to John Evans (who often acted as mediator). The latter replied that she wished the Church to pray on her behalf. Richard Jones was faithful beyond measure and always present at the services. He died March 1871, at the age of 89, having been deacon 53 years, and was buried at Llanbadarn." Another deacon, William Jones, is noted at J162.

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Lloyd Jones, the son of John Jones of Wilai rog in this parish, and Jane his wife, who departed this life on the 23 rd day of September 1837, aged 15 weeks.
In the baptism register of Llanbadarn Church there is an entry recording the baptism of Thomas Lloyd Jones, the son of John and Jane Jones, of Wilairog, farmer, on the 19th of June 1837. He is buried above but exactly the same entry re-appears when his brother, named after him, was baptised on the first of October 1838.

In memory of Elizabeth Jenkins, wife of John Jenkins, joiner, and daughter of John and Ann Jones, Castle, Trefechan, Aberystwyth, who died 19th of February 1870, aged 23 years. Also Ann Jones, wife of John Jones, (Castle, Trefechan), and mother of the above Elizabeth Jenkins, who died 26th November 1875, aged 57 years. Also John Jones, who died 10th March, 1878, aged 70 years.
John Jones was a customs officer at the harbour of Aberystwyth, who lived at Castle House, Trefechan, in 1871, with his wife Ann, and their surviving daughter, Ann. Also staying with them as a boarder was one George Winchester who is described in the census as a 'Brewer's Pupil'.

In memory of Anne, eldest daughter of of Philipps, surgeon etc. of Aberystwyth. Died 11th April 1835, aged 19 years. Underneath are also deposited the earthly remains of J .R. Philipps, surgeon, M.R.C.S.L., who died on the 26th of July 1847, aged 34 years.

Underneath lies the body of Caroline, third daughter of O. Philipps, Surgeon etc. of Aberystwyth, and Anne his wife, who departed this life June 22nd 1825, aged 4 years, 3 months.
Owen Philipps was a surgeon who lived in North Parade, Aberystwyth, in 1841, with his wife Charlotte, and their children George, WilIiam and Sarah. It appears that he was much older than Charlotte and so was probably married to Anne, see above, whose children, Anne, Caroline and John R. Philipps are recorded above; in 1851 Charlotte Philipps was a widow living in St. Michaels Place with her son Edward and daughter Charlotte, who was born in St. Clears.
J.R. Philipps was recorded in the 1841 Census as a surgeon living in North Parade with his wife Jane. There is preserved a letter of application in his own hand at the National Library of Wales (see NLW 7963E) addressed to the Chairman of the Committee of the Aberystwyth Infirmary which was then in the process of setting up an infirmary in Aberystwyth which was established by June 1839. The letter is dated 'July 20th 1838' and reads: “Sir, Finding that there is a vacancy in the surgical department of the Aberystwyth Infirmary I beg leave to offer my services as Surgeon to the Institution. Should I be so far honoured as to be selected I trust that by studious and regular attendance your confidence in me will not be misplaced - and that I shall be found a zealous and active officer of the Institution". The man listed as the first surgeon of the Aberystwyth Institution was William Evans.

John Edwards was born in Llanilar but lived in Penparcau in 1871 with his wife Margaret and daughter Jane. See H44.

In 1871 Jane Elizabeth Jones lived at Castle Lane, Trefechan, with her mother Elizabeth, a mariner's wife, and sister, Ellen, a dressmaker.

William Davies was a carpenter and joiner and also a wheelwright who lived at Comins Coch with his wife Jane and his eight children, Ann, Susannah, Elizabeth, David Robert, Mary Jane, Alice Eleanor and Emma, all of whom were baptised at Llanbadarn Church between September 1844 and August 1863.

Edward Jones was a journeyman blacksmith in 1851 when he lived in the 'Old Bath House' in Corporation Street with his wife, Mary, and their children, Richard and Edward. In 1861 and 1871 Edward Jones, recorded as a blacksmith, and his wife were recorded still at Corporation Street, Aberystwyth.

Abraham Jones, a retired farmer, is recorded in the Census of 1871 living in Llanbadarn Fawr with his wife, Jane, and five of their children; Richard is described as a 'Mine engine driver'; John, a labourer; Elizabeth and Jane both dressmakers; Abraham, a school boy. The first four children named are buried at Llanbadarn (see F64).

A note from Mike Hughes: Albert, I visited the above on Saturday (May 2007).. Unfortunately the church arranged for
the churchyard to be tidied up and the gravestones H59 and H60 (with others) are no longer in the positions shown
on your map. H59 still exists and is in a line of gravestones to the left of it's original position when you face the church. H60
does not appear to exist and may have been damaged when the work was carried out. I have also found out that according
to the parish records at the NLW another of my relatives, Morgan Hughes was buried in the churchyard in 1878 but I believe
the grave is unmarked. Many thanks for all your help. With time permitting I would like to add to the info I have already sent

In loving memory of Elizabeth, wife of John Hughes, tailor, of Aberystwyth, who died Sep 2nd 1890, aged 45 years.
On the death of her husband Margaret Hughes, with her young child, John, and obviously pregnant for she had another boy, Charles, in 1842, lived in Baker street, Aberystwyth.. She became a cap maker by 1851 when she lived at Windmill Court, an area of low roofed houses off Eastgate Street where a working windmill once stood, with her son John, aged 12 and a tailor, and her nine year old son, Charles. John Hughes is recorded in the 1871 Census living in High street, Aberystwyth, with his wife Elizabeth, and two young daughters Margaret and Elizabeth; his mother, Margaret, then lived in Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth.

I have been researching my family tree as my father was originally from Aberystwyth. I found your website by accident but I am glad I did. While I was checking through the churchyard index I noted John Hughes Ref. No. H59. He is my Great Great Grandfather. I was quite excited by the research that had been carried out by you, particularly as you mention Margaret Hughes. She married Henry (Harry The Boat) Hughes in 1889 and lived in Poplar Row until 1909 when she died at the age of 40. They are both buried in the cemetery on Llanbadarn Road. Another member of the family I am trying to trace is Bridgard Edwards who married John Hughes in Llanbadarn in 1814. They had three sons Morgan (1818), John (1821) and William (1822). Further to my e mail earlier today I have found a photograph of the gravestone of Margaret and Harry Hughes in the cemetery on Llanbadarn Road. Harry Hughes died in 1946 not 1942. John J Hughes was my Great uncle. He was known as John 'Bach the Donkey' and worked as a groundsman at the university. He was killed on a Sunday morning when some scaffolding he was walking past collapsed on him. I don't know where the incident occurred. His photograph is in the book 'Aberystwyth Yesterday' which was published about 30 years ago. Incidently my Grandmother is also in the book. There is a photograph of a Sunday school coach trip about 1914? She is the young girl with the big hat at the front of the group. Evan John Hughes is my Grandfather and husband of Ella Hughes. He worked as a firelighter/fitter at Aberystwyth locomotive shed. He could not work on the footplate as he was colour blind

William and Ellen Davies are recorded in the Censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871, residing in Baker Street, Aberystwyth, where they let rooms to lodgers.

David Richards was the son of John Richards who leased Rhydyfirian Farm from the Powells of Nanteos in May 1779 on a lease for three lives. The rent on the farm was £7 annually with the additional duties of providing the landlord with one hen and forty eggs at Shrovetide and six chickens at Whitsuntide: in addition the tenants had to provide a day's labour carrying muck and two days labour reaping as well as agreeing to grind their wheat and other grain at Rhydyfelin Mill.

Here lieth the body of John Morgan, late of Aberystwyth, timber merchant, who died June 21st 1785, aged 53 years. He maintained thro' life the strictest integrity in his dealings. He was a steady, active and sincere friend and his affection for his family was exemplary. This tribute of gratitude and justice to his memory is paid by his surviving family, a widow and two sons. Here also lies the body of Ann Morgan, wife of the above John Morgan. She died March the fifth 1795, aged 63 years. Near this place lie also buried seven of his children by Ann, his widow above mentioned, who all died in infancy. Also greatly lamented by her family and friends, Jane, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Morgan. Born August 1794. Died February 1860.

In affectionate rememberance of Mary Morgan, second daughter of Thomas and Catherine Morgam, who died on the 1st of December 1873, in her 82nd year. Also of Catherine, last surviving daughter of Thomas and Catherine Morgan, who died May 10th 1876, aged 72 years.
The above were all related to M. Thomas Morgan and further memorials to the Morgan family are contained within the Church, in the North Transept. Thomas Morgan was a partner in an early Aberystwyth bank, probably the Ship Bank, (Banc y Llong), and, with his wife, Catherine, had the following children: Anne Margaret, Mary, Jane, Thomas Owen and Catherine, though there were one or two others, girls, who died in infancy and were buried in the Chancel. Thomas Owen Morgan was a well known figure in Aberystwyth and was Mayor of the town in 1862 and 1863. He married late in life and was survived by his wife, Jane, who died in Aberystwyth on October 6th 1881. Thomas Owen Morgan was author of the 'New Guide to Aberystwyth' of 1848, and a supporter of the newly opened University College of Wales at Aberystwyth to which he donated his collection of papers and artefacts but they were destroyed in the great fire at the College. John Theophilus was a butcher with premises at Aberystwyth where he lived, at Princess street, with his wife, Magdalene, and six children, Mary Jane, Sarah, John, David, Morgan and Margaret in the early 1870's though he appears to have moved to Llanbadarn Fawr by 1890. Magdalene was the daughter of John Evans of Blaencarrog and was living near Merthyr Tydfil when she married John Theophilus in 1860. According to the terms of her father's will she was to inherit one-third of his estate, amounting to £60 on her marriage but for some reason she did not receive her share of the inheritance in full from her sister after her father's death in 1863 and, despite sueing her sister she never got; her full share. Her husband, John, was also involved in several court cases and in 1871 came close to a prison sentence. He was involved with one John Morgan who was accused of stealing four sheep and selling them to John Theophilus for £2.15.10d (£2.79) as a result of which Morgan was transported for seven years. The Chairman in passing sentence on Morgan was very critical of John Theophilus and intimated that he had narrowly avoided being sent to prison. Magdalene Theophilus was the aunt of Mary Davies, a quiet 38 year old member of the Soar Methodist Chapel in Borth who was suffocated in her bed with a pillow by her brother-in-law, Thomas Richards. He was hung in November 1894 at Carmarthen. Morgan Theophilus was a horse dealer who was mentioned in the Cambrian News in April 1894. It seems that his father, John, had sued Evan Jenkins, the landlord of the Black Lion at Llanbadarn, for £50 as compensation for a black eye he had received during a vestry meeting when he claimed he was assaulted; he was awarded £4 with costs. After the case John Theophilus wrote to 'Baner ac Amserau' Cymru' alleging that the Black Lion supplied drinks to drunkards even early in the morning and on Sundays; apparently John Theophilus and his three sons had taken to standing around the Black Lion on Sundays to prove their point but Evan Jenkins sued for libel and was awarded £75 damages against 'Baner'.

John Cole was a chemist in Pier Street, Aberystwyth, where he lived with his wife Jane, and their children John, Edward, Mansel, Ida (who died young) and Alice Anne. He was also a druggist and tea dealer with another shop in Terrace Road in 1848 for he advertised in the 1848 'New Guide to Aberystwyth that he was selling "Fine black teas, loaf sugar, Turkey and Jamaica coffee, cocoa paste, chocolate paste and powder, spices, dandelion coffee, raspberry and strawberry jam, red and blackcurrant jelly, Jordan almonds, Indian mangoes, anchovies, potted meat, bloaters and shrimps; French and Durham mustard, snuffs, snuffboxes, fancy smelling bottles in great varieties, macaroni and vermicelli, Worcestershire sauce and Lea and Perrins” amongst other foods. He also sold 'Wiltshire cheese, Havannah cigars, lemonade, and soda water, wax candles, fancy biscuits, sugar candy, barley sugar, ginger and raisin wine; hair, nail and tooth brushes, gunpowder and shot'. The Aberystwyth Observer reported on the 12th of February : "On the 8th instant, in Welshpool, on his way home from London, after protracted illness much respected and sincerely regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends, aged 52 years, Mr. John Cole, Chemist and Druggist, of this town."
Two children of John Cole lie buried in St. Michael's Churchyard at Aberystwyth; they were Edward Mansel, who died on the 3rd of April, 1836, aged 19 months and Ida, who died on the 8th of November, 1842, in her second year.
John Cole was the Registrar of both the 1841 and the 1851 Census. John Cole's son, Mansel, died in South Africa but another son, Edward, became a grocer in Pier Street, Aberystwyth, where he lived with his wife, Jane, in 1871, and their children; Ida, Harriet, Blanch, Annie, Florence and John: their second son was Mansel Lawford Cole who died in 1876. John Cole's youngest daughter, Alice Ann, was married to the Rev. John E. Jones; their son, Edward Whetnall Jones was buried in the family vault and a memorial was placed in the Chancel of the Church. It is a lancet window designed by Mr J.P. Seddon, and the design shows the figure of Faith with her hand on the head of a child, who is pointing up to Heaven to the Angels, who are singing the hymn 'Glory to God in the highest'.
