In the 1851 Census John Pryse is described as the unmarried son of Gwen Pryse, a widow. He was a mason at Pontllanychaiarn and that must have made him a fairly respected member of the community. The village was composed of 62 persons arranged in 19 family groups; though nobody is described as a pauper there must have been a fair amount of poverty for most of the men were employed as agricultural labourers (eleven of the 18 occupations listed ). There were three masons, one tailor, one gardener, one butcher and a 'Moleketcher '. The molecatcher was a 71 year old man named Daniel Lewis but he was not the oldest man in the village still working: one David Jones, aged 70, worked as an agricultural labourer as did the 79 years old Evan Thomas; both Jenkin Morgan, aged 76, and Evan Evans, aged 73, were also in work as agricultural labourers. The latter two shared their house with younger female relatives - grand-daughter and daughter respectively aged 16 and 20 - who presumably acted as housekeepers. The largest family in 1851 was that of Thomas Jones and his wife Mary; they had five children ranging in age from 14 years to a baby of 7 months. There was one child, Mary, the daughter of James Jones, the butcher, who was born at Perry Township in Ohio, United States of America, probably as the result of her parents emigrating.

Thomas Jenkins was a mason of 35 years of age in 1871. He lived with his wife, Catherine and their four surviving children at Penparcau; one son, John, had died (and is buried at Llanbadarn, see C72), and so had their daughter, Anne; they were to have two more children, Morgan and Edward, who both died young.

Er coffadwriaeth am Elizabeth Morris, Clarach, yr hon a fu farw Medi 28ain, 1852, yn 75 mlwydd oed. Hefyd am Erasmus Williams, (mab y dywededig uchod), Morwr o Aberyswyth, a fu farw Mawrth 26ain, 1869, yn 70 mlwydd oed.
The Burial registers of the Church record that one Elizabeth Morris of 'Ty yn y Waun', Clarach, was buried in September 1832 and this could refer to the above especially as reading the inscriptions was very difficult. It is also the case that no one of that name was buried in 1852 and it is more in keeping with her son's age. He is recorded in the 1861 Census living in Chalybeate Terrace ,with his wife, Catherine, and her sister Mary Evans, who worked as a 'charwoman'. As he was a sailor there is no other record of him in the Census but his wife is recorded in the 1851 Census at Queen Street, and in the 1841 Census at Chalybeate Terrace where she shared the house of Thomas and Jane Jones, (J293).

Er coffadwriaeth am Morris Richards or Fronfraith fach, yr hwm a fu farw Rhagfyr 11ed, 1846, yn 57 mlwydd oed. Gwaed cyfawnder Iesu eu, ywymffrost llewn fy enaidai.
Benjamin Jones married Anne Griffiths on the 14th of August, 1835, and this probably forms the link between the two families. Their daughter, Elizabeth, died young but another daughter, Margaret, was baptised on the 30th of June 1848, wnen her father is recorded as working as a shoemaker. It is very probable that she married Richard Edwards and that their son, Thomas, is the infant referred to in C72b.
There is a record of Isaac Griffiths in the Baptism register when his son James was christened; then Isaac was recorded as living at Waunfawr and to be working as a labourer. Four years later this is confirmed in the Census of 1841 which, surprisingly, describes Isaac as being only 45 though the enumerators were allowed to guess ages or to round up and down ages to the nearest five. Isaac was married to Ann and his son James was then four years old. Isaac did have at least one other son, Thomas, for he is buried at Llanbadarn ( see C69 ).

The family is also recorded in the schedule of the Llanbadarn Fawr Tithe Map of 1846 when they lived in a house owned by Pardoe Dansey and also rented a small field. The 1871 Census records that Morgan and Elinor Richards, and their son Hugh, were living at Lanlwyd.

Sacred to the memory of Jane, wife of John Jones, Draper, of Aberystwyth. She died 21st of March 1856, aged 41 years. Wele'r bedd anedd unig - y llecha ei llwch cyssegredig; ei chlod sydd ucheledig, na ro daoed ar le ei hir drig. Also of the above named John Jones, who died April 5th, 1867, aged 74 years. Gwyn eu byd y rneirw y rhai sy yn marw yn yr Arglwydd.
In 1851 John and Jane Jones lived at 22, Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth, and were engaged in a grocery and drapery business. Although Jane was only 36 and was from Carmarthen she had nine children ranging in age from 1 year old to 14 years of age.
When the Census of 1851 was taken Great Darkgate Street was the centre of commercial life in Aberystwyth as well as being a residential street for it was common for families to live above their business premises. The population of Great Darkgate Street was large - 406 people lived along the street. The number of houses is difficult to calculate as not all house numbers were recorded but 42 house numbers are recorded plus another 20 family groups though it seems likely that some families rented rooms and thus shared the same household. A total of 72 different occupations are listed though many entered under the same occupation: this was especially true of children who were entered as 'scholar' or 'at home'; and of domestic servants who were mainly entered as 'servants'.
There was a large group of traders who entered their occupations as 'China and glass dealer'; milliner and dressmaker; mercer; ironmonger; provisions dealer; stamp distributor; eathenware dealer; wine and spirit merchant; linen and woollen draper. There was only one large hotel listed but its guests included a mine clerk; iron merchant; newspaper publisher and printer and a Captain in the 9th Lancers. There were publicans, lodginghouse keepers, a butcher and tavern keeper and, of course, their servants - porters, grooms, ostler, housekeeper, cook and maid.
Few professional men lived in Great Darkgate street but there were schoolteachers, a surgeon, nurses, a veterinary surgeon and a couple of curates plus a Calvinist Minister and a 'Minister of the Gospel'. There were clerks, wine merchants clerk and articled clerk; then there were drapers, an apprentice draper and a journeyman draper as well as a shopman. There was a printer, a binder and a printer's compositor; of course there was a baker, a coachmaker, a ropemaker, a saddler, bonnetmaker, watchmaker, dressmaker, cabinetmaker, strawbonnet maker, boot and shoe maker. There were also other workers - a cooper, blacksmith, a ship's carpenter, sawyer, mason, painter, labourer, plasterer and tinplate workers and a tinman. A master mariner, some mariners, a farmer, a laundress and a skinner. There was also a horsebreakers wife and a 'Keeper of the House of Correction' whose only customer was described as a railway worker's wife.
